Promise for Today - Such a Pain

Guest Author: Christopher Glotzbach
******************************
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Romans 8:28 NLT

What’s the deal with pain? I read once that pain is an incredible gift. But if we’re being honest… nobody wants to hear that.

Yet if we really stop and think about it, a life without pain could actually be dangerous.

Pain reveals.
Pain tells us when to stop.
Pain tells us when something is wrong.
Pain tells us when we’ve gone too far.

But sometimes, I think we misappropriate our pain. Often, we blame the wrong person. Sometimes I blame God for the pain in my life. Sometimes I blame other people. And if I’m really honest and willing to examine the situation, sometimes the pain is simply the result of my own choices, my own mistakes, or my own limitations.

For example:
A few months ago, I was at the gym attempting to do pull-ups. And because I’m not strong enough to do more than one pull-up, I have to use those elastic resistance bands.  And because I’m also apparently the least flexible person on the planet, I have a hard time getting out of those bands when I’m finished.

So picture this:
The band is fully stretched out, wrapped around my foot, and sitting at the bottom of my shoe. I finish my set, and I’m trying to get out of it. The band slips out from underneath my foot… …and SMACKS ME RIGHT IN THE FACE.

I was mad.  But more than anything, I was mad at the band. And then the Lord reminded me:
“The band is a tool. It didn’t hurt you.” And that got me thinking.

How often do I misappropriate pain onto God or onto other people when, in reality, the pain came from my own mistake?

Now, I’m not saying all pain is like this. Some pain is completely outside of our control. Some pain comes from the brokenness of this world. Some pain is caused by the choices of other people.
But sometimes… the thing I’m blaming for my pain is actually just the tool God is using to make me stronger. And maybe that’s why Scripture tells us to “consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2). Not because pain feels good. But because God can use even our pain to form us.

So today, my prayer is:

God,
Help me not to blame the tool or the vehicle You are using in my sanctification. Help me see my circumstances accurately. Give me the humility to recognize when I’ve contributed to my own pain. Forgive me when I wrongly accuse You—or others—for pain that I have caused myself. And regardless of where my pain comes from, help me trust You. Help me hold on to You. Help me walk with You. And help me allow You to use even the painful things in my life to make me more like Jesus.
Amen.

Promise for Today - God Won't Waste Your Hurt

Devotional by Pastor Rick

“These sufferings of ours are for your benefit. And the more of you who are won to Christ, the more there are to thank him for his great kindness, and the more the Lord is glorified.”
2 Corinthians 4:15 (TLB)

When you use your pain to help others, God will bless you in ways you can’t possibly imagine.

The apostle Paul went through enormous pain in his life, which is why God was able to use him in enormous ways. He was shipwrecked, beaten, and robbed. He went without food, water, and sleep. Yet God used him to spread the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire. In fact, if you were to ask Paul, “How’d you put up with so much pain?” He’d tell you it was because he wanted to bring people to Jesus Christ. He wanted to help others.

Paul said in the Living Bible paraphrase, “These sufferings of ours are for your benefit. And the more of you who are won to Christ, the more there are to thank him for his great kindness, and the more the Lord is glorified” (2 Corinthians 4:15).

You may never suffer the same ways Paul did, but you will go through pain in life. So you might as well use your pain for good and not waste it.

There are actually three kinds of suffering God uses to help others: self-imposed suffering, innocent suffering, and redemptive suffering.

Some suffering is the kind you bring upon yourself. You cause some of your own problems by making poor judgements. You don’t always make the right decisions, eat the right foods, or respond the right way to others.

Innocent suffering is when, through no fault of your own, you get hurt by someone else. Whether you were abandoned, rejected, or scammed, everyone has been hurt by the sins of other people.

But the highest form of suffering is redemptive suffering. This is when you go through pain or problems for the benefit of others.

This is what Jesus did. When Jesus died on the cross, he didn’t deserve to die. He went through that pain for your benefit so that you could be saved and go to heaven. In the same way, God will use your pain to bring hope and healing to others.

Who can better help somebody going through bankruptcy than somebody who has gone through bankruptcy? Who can better help somebody struggling with an addiction than somebody who’s struggled with an addiction? Who can better help parents of a special needs child than parents who raised a special needs child? Who can better help somebody who’s lost a child than somebody who has lost a child?

God will never waste a hurt. God will work in your life so that He can work through you to encourage others.

Praise God and rejoice during trials, because suffering will build your endurance and help others in their pain. God can use all three kinds of suffering for good. Start by giving each of your hurts to Him and say, “God, I want you to use my pain to benefit others.”

Prayer:

Father,
We want to remain teachable, and we know You don't waste anything. Whatever You have allowed us to learn in our sufferings and pain, we want to use also for those who are in pain around us. We want to love and serve like Jesus. And it's in His Name we pray. Amen

Predesigned Parts

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

Hebrews 11:13-16 NLT

I paid for my higher education by being an assembler for Walmart. I put together bikes and furniture and lawn mowers and barbecue grills... At Christmas time, I built bikes for 3 different stores. For the most part, I liked doing it. One of the incentives was getting to the end of a workday and being able to actually see what had been done.

The items came in a box with predesigned parts and (sometimes) directions for how to put them together. The challenging ones were those boxes that had too many parts or worse - not enough parts. Too many meant I had to go back over everything to make sure I hadn't missed any connections. Not enough meant trips to the hardware department to see if I could find the missing parts.

Those boxes messed up my workday. I got paid piecework - so much per item - and when I had to go over an item twice or go find hardware, I didn't get paid for that extra time. Sometimes, the store didn't carry the missing part and we'd have to file the paperwork to order the part(s) that should have been in the box. Early on, I learned to look for all the hardware. I knew which ones were most likely to be missing parts, etc. The expectation was that boxes from certain makers were not going to have what was needed for the finished project.

I was thinking about that today in relation to our walk with God. What is our expectation at this stage in life? Have our life experiences caused us to think that there are parts missing in our lives and we may never get it right?  Or maybe we've had too many of some parts of life thrown into our path so that now we expect to trip and fall...

Let me tell you something I know to be true. God predesigned you to be part of His perfect plan. He put all your parts together. He knew what you would need to be able to accomplish His purpose for your life. Think about it. Maybe you needed the strength to be an overcomer. I would remind you that you can't be an overcomer unless you've had something to overcome... You don't know the joy of winning until you've known the pain of losing. All sunshine sounds good, but no rain leaves us in a drought with no flowers and a dried-up lawn. So, yes, even pain and rain are parts of His plan. It's perfect. Exactly what you need for the big finish.

Prayer:

Father,
As hard as it is, and as crazy as it sounds, we thank You and praise You for all the parts we consider to be too much, for all the parts we perceive as missing, for the pain and the rain. Build us into Your perfect plan in Your perfect timing. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

* Losing Your Mind

Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks. Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 Common English Bible (CEB)

"I think I'm losing my mind," her voice was subdued in response to my question. She wasn't joking or making light of the inquiry. I knew she was serious. There was no sparkle in her eye; there was only torment. The weight of emotional pain was overwhelming her - body, soul, mind, and spirit.

Have you ever been in that place? Chances are, you may have been at one time or another. Maybe you're there now, wondering what in the world you are going to do. And if that's you, I want to speak directly to you.

I don't know your circumstances or your questions, but God does. I don't have all the answers, but I know the One Who does. I have been in that same place and I am here to tell you - unequivocally - that God will bring you out. Don't give up. Don't quit now. He WILL see you through to the other side of this. What I DO have is the living proof of His faithfulness to make good on the promises in His Word.

You see, I thought I was a goner. I thought dying would be the only way out of the mess I was in. I was so broken and dead inside that I couldn't see any way out. I couldn't keep two coherent thoughts in my head because of the things that overwhelmed me. I was losing my mind. Then I found the verses of our promise for today.

Back then, I didn't know if God had the time or the inclination to hear all my prayers and petitions, but I chose to believe the Truth of His Word over the facts of my circumstances. And now, this many years later, I am here to tell you that God keeps His Word, and if we will choose to keep His Word, too, then we will surely reap the many benefits of His peace that exceeds all understanding and will keep our hearts and MINDS SAFE in Christ Jesus.

The Word of God tells us if He does it for one person, He'll do it for all, so let me leave you with this encouragement from Psalm 40...

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.

Prayer:

Father,
I pray according to Your Word that Many will see what [You] have done and be amazed, and that they will put their trust in You, Lord. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
