A Change of Heart

Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world...
Philippians 2:14-15 KJV

Do you ever catch yourself grumbling or complaining for no real reason? You get irked because somebody cuts you off in traffic or interrupts you to ask you to do something for them even though they can see you're in the middle of something?

I've found myself doing that the last couple of days and I don't like it. My prayer has been like the song, ♪♫ Change my heart, O God.  Make it ever true. Change my heart, O God. May I be like You. ♪♫  I don't want to be a malcontent. I want to be blameless and harmless - a light in a dark world.

What I have realized is that God is not going to change my heart by causing others to stop interrupting me or to quit cutting me off in traffic. That's the way I would like for Him to do it. But no, His ways are not my ways...

It has taken me a little while to realize that God has arranged ample opportunities - a veritable onslaught of interruptions and less-than-polite drivers - so that I may be able to practice not grumbling and/or complaining, and to lovingly provide for a possible change of my heart.

Prayer:
Thank You for Your everlasting love and for the hope that we could be like You. ♪♫ Change our hearts, O God.  Make them ever true. Change our hearts, O God. May we be like You. ♪♫ In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Take the Heat

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, "My child, don't make light of the Lord's discipline, and don't give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child." No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
Hebrews 12:5-6,11 NLT

Sometimes life seems like a slow roast. All we see or feel is the fire - for a LONG time. We don't want it. We don't like it, but can we be used for our purpose without going through the fire? Think about it. What good is an uncooked chunk of meat if it's just in a pot with raw potatoes and other vegetables and spices and there's no roasting? Can it be used for its purpose without the fire? Can it be as good if it's only in the fire for a half-hour? No, it has to be in the fire for the full amount of time.

Likewise, God is not a microwave. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather be cooked to perfection. 1st Peter 1:6-7 in the New Living translation reads, So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

I want to be fit for His purpose. I don't want to be pulled from the fire because I couldn't take the heat.

Prayer:

Father,
As it is in Your Word, Isaiah 43:2, we trust You when we go through deep waters, that You will be with us. When we go through rivers of difficulty, we will not drown. When we walk through the fire of oppression, we will not be burned up; the flames will not consume us. You are in control and You are trustworthy. We want to bring You praise and glory and honor. We choose You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

License

Don't overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. God isn't late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn't want anyone lost. He's giving everyone space and time to change.
2nd Peter 3:8-9 The Message

How often do we judge others by their actions and judge ourselves by our intent? How often do we excuse ourselves by "claiming" grace and mercy? Let's get one thing straight.

Romans 6:14-16 NLT makes that very clear - Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace. Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.

Grace and mercy are not license to do whatever we want to do to please our flesh. Well, then what ARE they for? They're for when we are trying to live a holy life, following the mandates of God, but we still make mistakes. We sin because of the weakness of our flesh, Hebrews 4:15-16 tells us, This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Grace and mercy - they're gifts, not excuses. But when the Day of God's Judgment does come, it will be unannounced, like a thief. The sky will collapse with a thunderous bang, everything disintegrating in a huge conflagration, earth and all its works exposed to the scrutiny of Judgment. Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life? Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day—but we'll hardly notice. We'll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness. So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace. Interpret our Master's patient restraint for what it is: salvation. Salvation from sin, not license to sin.
(2nd Peter 3:10-14)

Prayer:

Father,
Wake up our hearts and minds to know You in YOUR reality, not ours. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

No Debate

And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah 9:6b-7 NKJV

If you turn on a radio, TV or computer, you know there is an overwhelming amount of debate over the current circumstances. I'm not seeing much reconciliation or attempts to go to someone in love to discuss differences. Here's what I DO know. I don't like what's happening in this country. I haven't for a long while. However, I am not going to be caught up in all the angst. I am a sojourner here.

That's not to say that I don't love this country or that I won't pray for the world. According to 2nd Chronicles 7:14, if we want our land to be healed, we must do much more than pray. But our comfort should be that this world is not our home. Philippians 3:20 NLT ...we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.

Luke 12: 22-26 Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?

For those of us who follow Christ - no matter where you live right now - here's the Good News that's not open for debate. It is simply the Truth. This world is not our final home. And there is NO corruption in Heaven because there is NO corruption in the Lord our God and King.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for being the Lifter of our heads - for lifting us above the circumstances of life. Thank You for the measure of faith You have given us to be able to believe in You and trust Your Word. You are God and we surrender to Your will. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Together In This

Philippians 2:1-8 tells us,  Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Prayer:

Father,
Strengthen us to take the encouragement from belonging to Christ, the comfort from His love, the fellowship together in the Spirit and keep our hearts tender and compassionate.  Lord, we want to follow You by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, and of one mind. In unity together, In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen

The Heavens Declare...

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.
Psalm 19:1-4 NLT

There has been much said (and argued) about the blood moons and the eclipse and the hurricanes and what the different medias are referring to as the "Revelation 12 sign". I've been asked many questions about all of this, but I am the first to admit that I'm not a scholar in end time prophecies.

However, there are Truths I have learned through the years. The first being ...NO ONE knows the day or the hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. (Matthew 24:36 NLT). So if someone states a specific day and the world is watching, you can best believe it will NOT happen that day.

We have been witnessing lots of biblical cross-references with the world news. In vvs. 32 and 33, Jesus says, Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near... It would behoove us to pay attention.

There are those who may be too smart for their own good in that they will use human reasoning to mock and try to discredit everything. They did the same thing to Noah. Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:37-39 - When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

And for those who want to debate whether or not God uses stars and their alignment to show the world His plans, I would lovingly point you to Matthew 2:2, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

Prayer:

Father,
We are looking for the Day You call us home to be with You in the City that has no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it - according to Revelation 21:23, because Your glory, O God will lighten it and the Lamb of God will be its Light. Even so, come quickly. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

To Increase Our Faith

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Romans 12:3 NKJV

...each one a measure of faith... Does that mean that God has given the same measure to everyone or to each a measure of faith according to God's purpose in his or her life?

Today, I thought about this with regard to the parable of the talents in Matthew 25. In that story, one servant was given 5 talents, one was given 2, and the last received 1, but ALL were expected to increase what they were given...

It is my opinion that similarly, we are to increase our faith. Hebrews 11:6 reads,
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. How do we do that? According to Romans 10:17, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God

We know that trials and tribulation will test our faith, but it starts very simply. We must spend time in His Word. Spending time, building the relationship. We can't trust or have faith in someone we don't know.

Prayer:

Father,
We humbly ask for a fresh anointing to read and understand You and Your Word. Increase our faith so that we may please You and You alone. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Which Is It?

So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.
Hebrews 10:35-36 NLT

"I've left it in the Lord's hands." How many times have we heard that? How many times have we said it ourselves?

In the course of conversation, I found myself questioning - Are we believing God or blaming Him? Is it a declaration or a denial? Faith or failure? When we say we've left it in His hands - are we declaring our confidence in God to see it through to fruition, or is it a cop-out because we don't want the responsibility?

Actions speak louder than words. When it comes down to a choice between God's will or our own way, do we continue to do God's will - to trust Him in spite of what we feel, what people say - or do we quit? Which is it?

Prayer:

Father:
According to Your Word, we choose to walk by faith and not by sight. We have not yet achieved it, but we focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, we press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which You, through Christ Jesus, are calling us. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Provision

If you carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and soul, then he will send the rains in their proper seasons—the early and late rains—so you can bring in your harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil. He will give you lush pastureland for your livestock, and you yourselves will have all you want to eat.
Deuteronomy 11:13-15 NLT

Even though we're not all farmers or ranchers, we understand the promise of provision made by God in our text for today. It's a vision, isn't it? Can you see yourself with every need met? What are you willing to do for it? More importantly - What are you willing to STOP doing for it? Yes, it IS a promise, but it is provisional.

Verses 16 and 17,  “But be careful. Don’t let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the Lord and serve and worship other gods. If you do, the Lord’s anger will burn against you. He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain, and the ground will fail to produce its harvests. Then you will quickly die in that good land the Lord is giving you."

Yes, God LOVES us unconditionally, but a covenant relationship requires commitment and action on both sides, and I'm not talking about the casual commitment of today's society. Covenant is not to be entered into lightly. God wants all of us - every bit of us. And in return, He will give us every bit of Himself. What a promise of provision THAT is!

Prayer:

Father,
We give it all to You, holding nothing back, because You held nothing back from us at Calvary. Help us to walk worthy of Your covenant and commitment. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Let It Begin with Me

A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.
2nd Timothy 2:24-26 NLT

Did you ever notice in Scripture how the apostles addressed and defined themselves?
Paul, a servant of the Lord;
Peter, a slave to Christ;
His servant John;
James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

All in submission - all in service to God and Christ Jesus.

What is it servants do? Whatever the Master instructs them to do. Not IF they feel like it. Not WHEN they feel like it. Not only if the the other servants do or don't do it. Not only when someone's looking...

A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.

He had to include that one, right? The be patient with difficult people phrase? I noticed there's not a qualifying statement attached to that sentence, either; such as, except for Mondays or be patient with difficult people once or twice, but smack 'em the 3rd time...

Can it really be that big of a deal? Is it that important for us to be patient with difficult people? The Word says, Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap.

Their eternity could be determined by whether or not we CHOOSE to be kind and patient to them. It's time for a change. Let it begin with me.

Prayer:

Father,
Change MY heart so that I can be kind and not quarrelsome. Patient and not peeved. Let my life reflect Your love. May I never again get down to that last nerve. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen

Revisiting this Landmark...

And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart, so they will obey my decrees and regulations. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God.
Ezekiel 11:19-20 NLT

Long distance trail horses do much better on a trail that is termed a "single track with garbage" than they do on an established wide trail or open field. (Obviously, single track is one horse passes at a time; garbage means lots of brush, rock, etc.) I thought that sounded illogical until he explained an established wide trail or open field can be a total distraction for the horse. Lots of things to look at and the horse gets competitive with the other animals. In addition, there is very little concern on the horse's part for how he steps because there doesn't appear to be any danger.

On a single track with garbage, the horse is very focused and carefully picks its steps. There are usually no distractions - or at least, very few. The horse is highly unlikely to break and run and is extremely responsive to the rider's slightest touch of instruction... and it was right there that God tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention.

Now, I don't know about you, but there are times, (even though I know I'm NOT) it feels as though I'm walking alone. I reiterate - I know I'm not alone, but sometimes, I can't see a clear path in front of me. I don't see the water source ahead. At times, the way is so close that it's hard to see at all. And I have to watch every step I take. There's the underbrush of life's debris and distractions to stub my toes or twist my ankle or cause me to fall and come up lame.

However, I know it is in the tough spots that I am most focused on following His lead and the most responsive to His slightest instruction. God hasn't taken me on this single track with garbage so that I will be confined and alone. No, I may not be able to look around to see where I am or where I am going, but I am not lost. I am found. The Great I AM, the Omnipotent Way Maker has chosen this single track with garbage. He's brought me this way so I can know Him better and trust Him more.

Prayer:

Father,
Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path and by Your grace, I will follow only You. Completely close my eyes, my ears and my spirit to anything that is not of You. Guide my every step, O God. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen

Shake It All Off

The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said to each other, “A murderer, no doubt! Though he escaped the sea, justice will not permit him to live.” But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed. The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn’t harmed, they changed their minds and decided he was a god.
Acts 28:4-6 NLT

My pastor taught on this passage recently. Paul - a prisoner. Shipwrecked. Cold, wet and now, snake-bit. But Paul had a purpose and it was beyond being snake bit. A total encouragement to me... no kidding.

My life has been something of a parallel recently. The last week of July, I spent four days in the hospital because my doctor thought I was having a heart attack. Long story short - it was a side effect to a medicine. (Is anyone who knows me shocked by this? SOME day they'll listen to me...) My heart is fine, by the way. They were so surprised. They want me to be in shape. I say round is a shape and it works for me.

However, while they were running all the nuclear tests (I glowed in the dark for the 1st two weeks of August!), they found an abnormality on the right clavicle that was "suspect". Found it July 27th - ONE day before I was able to make the official proclamation of having been cancer-free for one full year. I was mad, sad and scared. They'd already done 3 nuclear tests in 4 days, so they scheduled a full body bone scan 3 weeks later.

I went on a Friday for the whole body bone scan. They wound up doing two additional spot scans and another CT scan that same day. The results were that there was “something” in/on the bone, but they couldn't determine whether or not it was benign or malignant. They wanted to perform an MRI, but I can't do an MRI without full sedation. And that's not normal procedure, so we had to have approval which involved waiting another four weeks before completing the test.

Four more weeks of not knowing. Four weeks in which Hurricane Harvey came to visit and brought enough water that spiders and frogs and snakes also came to visit - to the point that I was ready to buy an unblemished male lamb and mark the door posts and lintel... Four weeks of experiencing a literal crash course in coming to the stark realization that I am not in control of those things that affect my life.

However, God is. And He is trustworthy. And He is always God and in control, and He is always good whether or not I like what He's doing. When I finally came to that place of understanding and made the choice that I could and would trust God, no matter what, the peace came. I realized I still have purpose. I'm not done yet. So, I made the conscious decision to lay aside the fear that kept trying to creep up, the doubts that tried to grip me. I was determined through Christ to shake it all off.

Today, I went for the results of the MRI, trusting God no matter what. On my way to work, three of the four songs played on the radio were from my Fight Song playlist I created to help battle the first round of cancer. Two hours later, when I left work to go to my appointment, KSBJ played 3 more of the list. Now, how can you help but be encouraged when the Creator of ALL things takes the time to orchestrate your Fight Song list to be played during times you wouldn't normally listen to the radio?

Oh, and I'm thrilled to report. I am CANCER-FREE.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for Your faithfulness. Thank You for loving me enough to get the most mileage out of my crash course in who is truly in control. Thank You for being in control. Help us to continue to recognize and submit to Your authority in all things. In Jesus' Name we pray, Amen

Let Me Be the Judge of That

Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. Give, and you will receive
Luke 6:37-38a NLT

So often, we want to be the judge of what we want and or need from life. We want to make our own decisions about those things that concern us. Well, what DO we want out of life? Peace. To love and be loved. Make a decent living. Have people like us and not be judged by them. Maybe not necessarily in that order.

What do we need out of life? Security, Love, Forgiveness... Also, maybe not necessarily in that order.

Want and need are actually two very different criteria; yet, if we follow God's instruction, we find both. If we don't judge, we won't be judged. (Love) If we forgive, we will be forgiven. (Forgiveness) If we give, we will receive. (Security) It's rather straightforward. It really is as simple as our Promise for Today lays it out for us. Judge for yourself.

Prayer:

Father,
Open our eyes of understanding and soften our hearts to receive Your Word. Give us wisdom, O God. Help us to know and understand Your will for us. We want to live as You would have us to live, holy and acceptable unto You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

No End to Government

When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.
Matthew 24:37-39

My friend and I... I’m not sure we’ll be having any more discussions on the world situation or world peace. I explained that I, too, am a student of Government. I even went so far as to clarify exactly what was going to happen, and I cited a few excerpts for him from the different books I’ve read and related what the Head of my Government has to say. You see, I have total faith in the Head of my Government.

Isaiah 9:6-7b For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.

I suggested that perhaps my friend is so upset because he has no idea where it all will end. I already know what’s going to happen because the Head of my Government told me.

Isaiah 54:10 For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” Says the LORD, who has mercy on you.

Matthew 24: 6-13 And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

So meanwhile, as the world continues hurling headlong to the point in time when it is truly the end, I am in a covenant relationship with the Head of my Government – the only Government that could ever supply all I need. And He promised peace - on His terms. John 14:27, I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

I'll take those terms from the One of whose government and peace there will be no end.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for Your covenant of peace. We praise You for providing our safe shelter ahead of the bad times. Help us to continue sowing seeds of peace, and offering Your Good News to whosoever will… Prepare their hearts and minds to listen and receive. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen

Undone

So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.”
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.”
Isaiah 6:5-7 NKJV

"Here in Your presence, we are undone..." this line from the song of the same name was my undoing, but with a whole new definition.

When we come undone from the world's perspective, we've come to the end of our proverbial rope without any hope whatsoever. It's the end of the line - the great crash and burn...  Whatever it is, whatever it was, it will never be again. We're done for. It's over.

When we come to the end of ourselves and all our determination to do things our way; when we come to the end of it all - having failed in our endeavors; when we fall on our face before God Almighty, broken and without hope - contrary to how it appears - we are not done for. We are undone.

What is "undone"? The opposite of done? So, is that to say it isn't finished? It isn't over? Think about that for a moment. Here's the revelation I got on it. In God's presence, undone = all the bad things in our lives untangled from our hearts. In His presence, every mistake we've ever made is undone. We are undone from the chains, no longer bound by sin and shame.

Come to Jesus. In His presence, we are undone. Thank You, Lord!

Prayer:

Father,
What a great blessing to be undone in Your presence. When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers - the moon and the stars You set in place - what are mere mortals that You should think about them, human beings that You should care for them? And yet, You do. You carved us in Your hand. We are ever before You. Father, cause that Truth to come alive in us, so that we are undone in You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Borrowed from Amy at Live Right, Love Well

Note: I had an MRI with sedation today, and I'm still a little foggy. So this is something I haven't done before, I have copied this article from a woman named Amy (her link is included at the end) and posted it here because it spoke to my heart. I hope it is timely for my readers, as well.
********************************************************************

At 5am, Husband kissed me on the forehead and told me he loved me. Then he headed out to the airport for a work trip. I rolled over and tried to fall back asleep, but instead my mind kicked into full gear. What if he didn’t make it home? What would I do with the house? Should we downsize or stay put? And what should I do with the life insurance? Who could I trust to help me make those decisions? Who would step in and be a father figure for my kids? How much therapy would they need to process their grief? Ya know, all normal things.

After approximately 23 minutes of this madness, I realized I was not headed back to sleep so I grabbed my bible and journal and went downstairs for some quiet time. As soon as I began to write, I felt the Lord say “Those decisions feel overwhelming b/c I am not there. If you were to actually find yourself there, I would be there too and I would guide you in those decisions. Amy, you can’t dress rehearse tragedy.”

Dude. That’s heavy. It stopped me in my tracks and I realized that’s what I do. All the time. I enter a situation and then jump to the worst possible outcome and try to sort through all the possible ways this could go down. How would I deal? What would the damage be? What would the future look like from this point forward? I look for all the ways that I can make this situation turn out for my good.

Oh wait. That’s not my job. That is what the Lord was trying to speak to my heart at 5:30 on a Wednesday morning. I am completely inadequate in my self-sufficiency. I have neither the ways nor the means to fabricate the best possible outcome for any situation in my life. Why do I keep trying to do life on my own? Why is it that my first response to any situation involves my best reaction to it? Deep sigh.

As I sit in my quiet, still house, I realize how much time and emotional energy has been spent dress rehearsing tragedy. So much. It makes me angry and sad all at once because I realize it is a distraction from the enemy that works every stinkin’ time. Why? Because no matter what my head knows, my heart still struggles to believe that He is for me. That He is perfect in all of His ways, even when those ways hurt my heart. I wrestle with the truth that He is a good, good father. I still fight the tension of hearing His voice and believing His words. I’m still human.
God is God and I am not. My delusion of self-sufficiency is broken all over again and I land on this truth. And then a wave of relief follows. I don’t have to know it all or figure it out. Good! Because my way is exhausting. And what’s even dumber is that it’s not like He’s hiding. This is not a cosmic game of hide and go seek, where I have to figure out where He is before I can get the answers I need or the peace I am seeking. He is not the wizard, hiding behind a giant green curtain in a faraway land called Oz. Jeremiah 29:12-13 is perfectly clear.
“Seek Me and you will find Me when you seek Me with all of your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back from captivity.”
That’s a sweet promise. He is just a whisper away. So why do I avoid the whisper and insist on yelling at the mountains in front of me to move? I have never had a mountain move at the sound of my voice. But He has. I have never healed the sick or fed 5,000. But He has. I have never brought dead things back to life. But He has. His track record is pretty good. Even on the dark days when things don’t turn out like I hoped and prayed they would, and my heart burns with the pain of loss, He is there with a peace that really does pass understanding.

Dress rehearsals might be helpful in the theater, but they are pretty pointless in matters of real life. Jesus doesn’t come to our dress rehearsal. But come show time, He always shows up, and the whole script changes.

And Then... (reprint by request)

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
2nd Corinthians 4:16-18 NLT

It always amazes me how God orchestrates our lives and intertwines our lives together. He operates completely different from us - in action and in His way of thinking. Of course, He tells us exactly that in Isaiah 55 and yet, in hindsight, when I actually see all the connecting dots, it blows me away.

God not only sees the big picture; He IS the big picture. We tend to focus only on what's in front of us. How many times have you heard someone say I don't see God in this at all... And then, God is there.

Take Stephen, for example. When the apostles needed help with tending to widows and seeing to the practical needs of the church, Stephen was among the seven that were chosen. Actually, he was named first. Scripture tells us in the book of Acts that Stephen was full of faith and the Holy Spirit. Of course, we would choose him.

Further on in the chapter, we learn Stephen was full of God's grace and power and that no one could stand against his wisdom and the Spirit he had. Wow...no one could stand against his wisdom. Now, that's saying something! He even preached the Good News, and when he prayed for people, they were healed. Life was good. And then...

One minute, Stephen was in leadership, preaching the Gospel message of Jesus and laying hands on the sick and they were healed, and then someone lied about him. The next minute, he was brought before the religious leaders of the Temple (not to be confused with Jesus' disciples and leadership). He was accused, but according to the law, he had the opportunity to defend himself. And then, God made Stephen's face become as bright as an angel's face. Surely, that must have given his accusers pause.

Stephen answered his accusers by giving the history of Abraham and the covenant given to the Jewish people. Pretty impressive. He continued through to Moses and then to King David. So far, so good. The lies would surely be exposed. Stephen gets to the part about the Messiah descended from the line of David - all the things the high council learned in the Temple from the time they first attended...and then, that's when it got ugly. You can read about it in Acts 6 - 8.

It became a publicly announced kick-off event for the persecution of the church and the Christians. And then, some fled for their lives. And then, others were run out of town, but in their running, they also took with them the Good News and they spread the gospel of Christ throughout the world.

Oh, and then right before they stoned Stephen, his accusers laid their coats at the feet of man named Saul who was there to be a witness to Stephen's murder, and Saul became zealous in his persecution of the church and its members. The same Saul - who on the road to Damascus had a divine encounter with Jesus and then became Paul - who later wrote almost two-thirds of the New Testament....and then...

Prayer:

Father,
We don't always understand the whys, the wherefores and the therefores, but we are so grateful for Your faithfulness to us. We want to be faithful to Your will for us. Help us to clearly see the way You would have us go and then strengthen and enable us to walk in it. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

* A Cut Above

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
Isaiah 49:16a NIV

Most of us have had a paper cut at one point or another in our lives. For such a little thing, it is really irritating! It's crazy. It's just a little paper cut, but we are constantly aware of it. And especially so every time we move our hand. It is not something we would ever do intentionally. And yet, that's exactly what God did.

God ENGRAVED His people on the palm of His hands.

Intentionally.

He is EVER mindful of us...by His own choice!

Prayer:

Father,
In everything, even in the little things, keep us ever mindful of Your love, Your care and Your provision for us. Give us grateful hearts to recognize and acknowledge You in all things, at all times, through every circumstance. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Here Comes Trouble

We sent him [Timothy] to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles. Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come—and they did, as you well know. That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong.
1st Thessalonians 3:2b-5a

If you're on the upside of the dirt, there will be trouble. How do we handle it? Do we choose to ask God's direction or just ask Him "Why?" After all, He knew it was going to happen. He's God, isn't He? Why didn't He stop it?

How do we handle that?

Do we endure?  Become one with it, take it on? Identify ourselves with it? What IS our identity? Really...do we want to be defined by trouble?

Do we run? Escape? Avoid it at all costs? We miss the lesson if we move away from it.

Do we enlist it? Make it work for us. James 1:2 reads, Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. Gee, I don't think I've met anyone who has said at the onset, "Oh, all these troubles are gonna bring me GREAT joy!"

We've been talking about faith and control. They have nothing to do with each other, by the way. Faith is a relinquishing of control, based on trusting God. Without faith, it's impossible to please God. Without relinquishing control of our lives TO Him, based on our trust IN Him, it's impossible to please God. Kinda lends a new meaning to, With God, all things are possible...

Is our trust linked to our perception of what He's done for us or will do? Do we trust Him just because He is who He is - God - and for no other reason? Do we know Him? It's one thing to say we know Him, it's another to see what our actions are when we don't get our own way, or if we need to sacrifice something we want.

You see, faith is an action word. Here comes trouble - what action will you take?

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive us for thinking of You only as our benevolent overseer. Help us to see You for who You are and what You are, no matter the circumstances. We place our trust in You. Help us to be a Timothy to those around us who may need to be encouraged. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Do Something About It

Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it.
2nd Corinthians 13:5 The Message

So what should we do? What's the answer? No matter the question, God's Word is the answer.

If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to tell you, for a doubtful mind will be as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind; and every decision you then make will be uncertain, as you turn first this way and then that. If you don’t ask with faith, don’t expect the Lord to give you any solid answer.

A Christian who doesn’t amount to much in this world should be glad, for he is great in the Lord’s sight. But a rich man should be glad that his riches mean nothing to the Lord, for he will soon be gone, like a flower that has lost its beauty and fades away, withered—killed by the scorching summer sun. So it is with rich men. They will soon die and leave behind all their busy activities.

Happy is the man who doesn’t give in and do wrong when he is tempted, for afterwards he will get as his reward the crown of life that God has promised those who love him. And remember, when someone wants to do wrong it is never God who is tempting him, for God never wants to do wrong and never tempts anyone else to do it. Temptation is the pull of man’s own evil thoughts and wishes. These evil thoughts lead to evil actions and afterwards to the death penalty from God. So don’t be misled...

But whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light, and he shines forever without change or shadow. And it was a happy day for him when he gave us our new lives through the truth of his Word, and we became, as it were, the first children in his new family.

...Don’t ever forget that it is best to listen much, speak little, and not become angry; for anger doesn’t make us good, as God demands that we must be.

So get rid of all that is wrong in your life, both inside and outside, and humbly be glad for the wonderful message we have received, for it is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts.

And remember, it is a message to obey, not just to listen to. So don’t fool yourselves. For if a person just listens and doesn’t obey, he is like a man looking at his face in a mirror; as soon as he walks away, he can’t see himself anymore or remember what he looks like. But if anyone keeps looking steadily into God’s law for free men, he will not only remember it but he will do what it says, and God will greatly bless him in everything he does.

Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn’t control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn’t worth much. The Christian who is pure and without fault, from God the Father’s point of view, is the one who takes care of orphans and widows, and who remains true to the Lord
... James 1:5-27

Prayer:

Father,
We want to be and remain solid in our faith. We ask for wisdom to know Your Word that will keep us there. We ask for the leading and correction of the Holy Spirit so that we don't stray. Cause Your Word to be alive in us. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

For My Good

But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
Genesis 50:20 NKJV

When things aren't going our way. When life throws us some curve balls or hurdles we were not expecting. When people, places and or things do not line up the way we think they should in our lives - why is it we always ask - "Where is God?" Do we think He's not watching? Do we question His Word in Matthew 28:20, that He is with us always, even to the end of the age? When we truly come to the understanding that God is who He says He is, and WE are NOT Him, then it will help us to understand that God is not shocked by anything that happens in our lives.

If our desire is to live before God with clean hands and a pure heart; to live holy and acceptable to Him, then we are going to go through the Refiner's fire.

Remember, it is in the fire that silver is purified. Refining gold begins with melting it. And diamonds are formed in high temperatures and incredible pressures. 1st Peter 1:7 tells us, These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

We must trust that God is working all things for our good. Even what was meant as evil against us!

Prayer:

Father,
We choose to trust that You are working all things for our good! We have seen the evidence of Your grace and mercy and we thank You for using all things for the perfecting of the saints, to bring about in us the character of Christ. Help us to keep our focus always on You and what You are teaching us. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Who Is My Neighbor

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
"Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”
The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Luke 10:25-29 NLT

Hurricanes and flooding and other so-called natural disasters don't pick and choose which side of town to wipe out. Devastation has no economic or social barriers. It doesn't care who you voted for or what color your skin happens to be. In the moment, it is a great equalizer.

We all know the story of the Good Samaritan. Here in Texas, we're living it. People we don't know pitching in to help gut homes devastated by Harvey and haul trash to the curb. Why? Simply because we need their help. The kindnesses we've experienced personally and witnessed for others are both humbling and overwhelming. People connecting and helping each other, giving to one another, sharing whatever they have to share. People I know who have lost - out helping others who have also lost. Those who have not lost - out helping those who have. It's amazing. It doesn't matter who you are or where you live or whether or not Harvey took anything from you, neighbors are helping neighbors.

Verses 36-37, “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.
The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

Prayer:

Father,
Oh, how I pray this love for our neighbors will transcend Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Katia... and earthquakes and tsunamis! Lord, we are witnessing Your love poured out across (and in spite of) socio-economic-politico barriers. Help us to be ever mindful to Now go and do the same. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Passing By

Note: Thank you for all the prayer cover and loving support and words of encouragement you have provided in the last 10 days or so with Hurricane Harvey. The battle is hard, but we are victorious! We have much to be thankful for - and we are!! God is good! And the Internet has finally been restored - Hallelujah! It's good to be back together.
*****************************
Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down.

Mark 6:47-51a NIV

I know I've read this passage many times, but tonight, it stuck out to me that Jesus was going to pass by them. The Message bible reads, "He intended to go right by them." And it reminded me of the old hymn, Pass Me Not, written by Fanny Crosby. Part of the lyrics - Pass me not, O gentle Savior. Hear my humble cry. While on others Thou are calling, do not pass me by...

Why would He do that? He saw them fighting the wind that was against them. He saw them straining at the oars. These were seasoned fishermen who knew their way around in a boat, plus they were His followers and they were struggling. Why wouldn't He just run to them and save them? But notice, it wasn't until they cried out in fear that He acknowledged them and turned to them.

How often do we do that? We're going about life, doing what we know to do. And there are those times when life gets really hard, and we just keep trying to do life in our own strength... All the while wondering why God doesn't do something. Can't He see what we're up against? Doesn't He see us struggling and straining? Is He really going to ignore our plight?

Have we called on Him or are we still trying to do everything in our own strength? Have we acknowledged and confessed our need for Him or are we too busy indicting Him? Are we passing HIM by?

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive us for thinking that we can do anything apart from You. Thank You for loving us enough to correct us and to turn our hearts. Thank You for Your protection and provision. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Another update on Andrea from her sister

Hello all,

Andrea is still without Internet so I am sending another update.

Today is a very tough day for Andrea and her family, they've been staying in their home trying to fight the battle of lost carpet, floor, drywall etc., however, today has brought the realization that they can no longer stay there.  Mold is seeping in no matter how hard they have tried and now it appears as though the house has shifted off its foundation based on daylight is being seen at ground level.  They are urgently packing up what has not been damaged by the water and are trying to find a place to stay until decisions can be made by the insurance adjusters as to whether or not the home can be repaired.

Her grown children are headed to U-Haul to get boxes and hopefully, a truck so they can get started loading what they can salvage.  People from her work are calling around to see if someone owns a RV or camper for them to stay in until they can find a more permanent solution.  It will be months before they would be able to be back in their home, please pray that they can find something within their budget.  My sister is a fighter, no matter how many times she gets knocked down, she gets back up, she will stay strong through this.  Right now she is feeling pretty battered but she is still standing, the devil will not take her joy away!!!  He's trying but he will not win!  The joy of the Lord is Andrea's strength, not her circumstances.

Pray for physical strength to get through all of the packing and discarding of ruined treasures.  She told me yesterday, she couldn't bear to see what all was lost so she made to the decision just to take it to the curb without knowing, things can be replaced....her family is alive and that is what matters most to her, others have not been as fortunate so she will remain thankful that they are together.  She will apply for FEMA help today now that she is one of thousands who have lost their home.

Thank you everyone for your continued love, prayers and concern.
