Friends' Favorites - The Right Mindset

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
Romans 8:5-6 NIV

Have you ever met someone with a certain mindset - that no matter what you said - they weren't changing their mind? Sometimes that can be a good thing; sometimes, not so good... It all depends on what set their mind in the first place. Was it Truth or circumstances of life or lies?

We've all met people who are convinced that life is just one crisis or tragedy after another. Their mindset is that life is bad or at the very least, depressing, and nothing can change it. No matter what you say, they don't see that they have a choice. And because that's what they believe in their mind, they're right. However, the Word of God tells us, I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; There IS a better choice!

Colossians 1:2 (NIV) instructs us to Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. We have a choice. We CAN choose life. If we set our minds on what the Spirit desires, we can - and WILL - have life and peace. What's your mindset?

Prayer:

Father,
Your Word tells us in Isaiah 26:3 that You will keep us in perfect peace when we trust You and keep our thoughts fixed on You. Help us to not entertain thoughts and mindsets that are displeasing to You. We want to walk according to Your Word. We choose to love You - the Lord our God, to obey Your voice and cling to You for You are our life and the length of our days. Cause us to keep our hearts and minds in submission to You and Your Word. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - My Neighbor

He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”
So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”
And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Luke 10:26-37 NKJV

We live in a time when knowing your neighbors - the ones on either side of your house - and knowing them well enough to lend or borrow a cup of sugar are seemingly things of the past. So, who IS my neighbor? What does it take to be one?

Mercy. Compassion. Born of God's love alive in us. When we see someone in need, are we moved with compassion to help meet their need? Do we dig down, find a way to contribute money or time? Will we inconvenience ourselves to help another?

By inconvenience, I'm not talking about taking food from our children's mouths. I mean would we forego one trip a month to Starbuck's and donate that $5 to an orphanage? Would we skip an hour or so of our latest streaming binge to visit someone who may need to know someone cares enough to come "out of their way"? Would we actually take the time to pray for the person on Facebook for which we just typed, "Praying"?

Or do we govern our lives by "my four and no more"? I believe Mr. Rogers (who was a minister) knew exactly what he was asking when he sang, "Won't you be my neighbor?"

[Jesus speaking], So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”

And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive us for all the times we never noticed the opportunity to be a neighbor. Open our eyes and our hearts to see and respond to "go and do likewise." In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Who Paid for This?

Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your body.
1st Corinthians 6:19-20 The Message

If we bought it and we paid for it and we have the scars to show for it, it's ours. We can do what we want with it. But the Truth of the matter is we didn't buy it, and we couldn't pay for it, and although we may have scars from the battles we've chosen to be part of IN our lives, our scars are not part or proof of the purchase price FOR our lives.

Only Christ did that. He bought it. He paid for it with His own blood, and He has the scars to show for it.

I love the way 1st Peter 1:18-20 reads in The Message: Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God. It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in. He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb. And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately—at the end of the ages—become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you

God ALWAYS knew He was going to do this for you... and for me. It cost God plenty... and He paid in full.

Prayer:

Father,
Open our eyes to see the great price that was paid for our redemption. Open our hearts to recognize and to know that apart from You, we have nothing and we are nothing. Help us to walk in the fullness of life that You have provided for us through Christ Your Son. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - What Will We Give?

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.
Luke 6:38 NKJV

God is big about giving. As with everything, He set the example. He doesn't say, "I'm snatching your money from you." "I'm taking your tithes." He says, "Bring it..." and then promises to pour out more blessings than we can hold in return. (NEWS FLASH! Blessing does not necessarily mean money! It's a blessing when you stay healthy while coworkers around you are coughing and hacking. It's a blessing when you find the perfect gift and it's on sale. It's also a blessing when your old car just keeps going.)

Whether it's your money, your goods, your time, or your talent - it's not how much you give, it's the attitude in which you give it. Have you ever heard someone say, "How much to make you go away?"  That is not a generous or grateful heart.

Grateful hearts tend to be generous. They understand what it is to have a need and have it met. Philippians 4:6b reads, Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. It doesn't say, "Tell God to go get it and wait until AFTER you get it to give thanks" although many times that's the attitude we see. People who say, I prayed and I didn't get it, and then they want to stop praying. It's like a spoiled brat who throws a tantrum when he doesn't get what he wants.

God knows the difference between want and need, good and bad, right and wrong, and because He IS love and loves US, He will not trade our needs for our wants or give us bad for our good, wrong for the right.

Scripture tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights. Good and perfect gifts. Given to us from God. Our example. What will we give? What measure will we use? Our best? Or whatever it takes to make Him or others go away?

Prayer:

Father,
Let us give good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over - with a cheerful disposition - and all for Your glory, not ours. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Story Teller

So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.
 Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NLT

Israel was getting ready to enter into the Promised Land. They had spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness until all the calf-building, idol-worshiping, rebellious generation was dead. Now, God was giving them a new future based on their history - their story - with God.

Moses reminds them in the preceding verses that their children weren’t there to see the miracles and signs God performed in Egypt, nor the discipline and greatness of God’s outstretched arm. This generation of children was not at the Red Sea. They knew nothing prior to the wilderness. Could they even understand the total provision by God for all those people - every day for 40 years - because of His great love and mercy?

Have you ever noticed that when families get together - who haven't been together in a while - how the conversation usually turns to reminiscing? Telling the stories about growing up - the good times and the tough times (tempered by the years) all about how somehow you made it through.

I haven't met a child yet who didn't love a good story. When my daughter was little, she loved to hear stories of "the old days." It gave her a connection. She was the newest member of the family at the time, but she already had a story connection because of being in the family.

As the family of God, we have a story. His story. And children - whether they're ours or baby Christians - need to know how He provided the good times and made provision through the tough times. They need to recognize God by the picture we paint of who He is.

Tell them your story. For you see, we are overcomers by the Blood of the Lamb - Jesus - AND the word of OUR testimony. Which story will you tell?

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for giving us a story to tell. Give us divine appointments to share our stories of You and Your great love for us. May we tell it at every opportunity provided. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Two Out of Three

So why do you call me 'Lord' when you won't obey me? But all those who come and listen and obey me are like a man who builds a house on a strong foundation and upon the underlying rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm, for it is strongly built. But those who listen and don't obey are like a man who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it crumbles into a heap of ruins.
Luke 6:46-49 The Living Bible

We don't like to lose. How many times have you said, "Okay, best two outta three?" When we do, about 1% of the time, we're showing mercy on the opponent who lost the first time (usually a child), but 99% of the time, it's because WE lost the first time and we don't like to lose.

As a nation, we think two out of three is good enough. Tennis matches are comprised of three sets. Two out of three wins. Any competition where more than one game is played, it's often the best two out of three. Elections, government ordinances, proposals are all won or lost by a two-thirds vote. Two-thirds is considered a majority - enough to win. And as a general rule of thumb, we think doing enough is good.

What's my point?

Two out of three is NOT enough in God's government. I'm not into numerology or anything like it, but understand what I'm about to say. Three represents completion in the Word of God. On the third day... Father, Son and Holy Spirit, these three are one... just a couple of examples. There are many others you will find when you study it out.

In God's kingdom, we don't win with two out of three. Our Scripture today clearly defines three - all those who (1) come and (2) listen and (3) obey... We want to come and listen, but we don't know about that obey thing. It's not convenient. That takes commitment and usually affects our finances or cuts into our leisure time.

Isn't it enough that I come to church and listen?
No, it's not.

Jesus said, So why do you call me 'Lord' when you won't obey me? We don't have the right to call Him Lord if we don't obey. So... best two outta three? You're going down...

It's all or nothing. Ask Jesus.

Prayer:

Father,
In a day and age when enough is considered good, please redirect our values. Birth and mature in us Your Kingdom principles. We know You gave all for us and we praise You for it and give You honor and glory. We want to give You all. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Friends' Favorites - Can't Argue with That

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
Galatians 5:16-17 NLT

Today, my life was an illustrated sermon of that Scripture passage. I had an appointment where I had to interact with a technician. I couldn't make up my mind whether I was going to write "forced me or allowed me to interact" but in all reality, it was both. At the beginning, I felt forced.

I can't explain it, but the minute the person opened her mouth, it went right to my last nerve and I was irritated. I wanted to be judge, jury and executioner, but felt the nudge in my heart to hold my tongue. To just be quiet. Hold my peace. I wanted so badly to point out and emphasize each of this person's inefficiencies, but the thought came unbidden, "What would Jesus do in this situation?" and I was reminded about every time God had shown me mercy and offered me grace for mistakes I made when I was trying to do the right thing. How could I argue with that?

In Phase 2 of the interaction, I thought I might get a different tech. No, not a chance. Same person and for the second phase, I was the captive audience for over an hour. While the tech ranted and raved about politics and conspiracy, I was trying to convince God that there was no possible reason I should have to listen to her drivel. I could make it stop. He reminded me of all the times He had listened to me rant and rave about everything and anything. And He reminded me that when I would finally run out of steam, He would speak a Word of Truth to my situation, and I would be changed. Then He reminded me of this passage in Colossians 3, Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. (vv. 12-14 NLT). I definitely could not argue with that.

And sure enough, there came a place in the one-sided conversation, where she asked an open-ended question which then gave me the perfect opportunity to say that my trust is in God, and not in the government. That God alone has the plan and purpose for not only us but also for all the elections and the world. Next thing you know, she's pouring out her heart about her family, and God allowed the opportunity for me to speak Truth to her situation. And while I only planted the seeds into her life, I know someone else will come along and water those seeds and God will give the increase because His Word says He will.

Now for good measure to test the battle in my flesh, after I left the facility the second time, the tech called me again to say she'd forgotten to send me for the other part while I was there and asked when I could come back. I wanted to be mad. I really wanted to... but I got a mental image of the seed sown being burned up before it had a chance to root. How do I argue with that?

As I sit here, reflecting on this day where I spent much of it in battle with myself, I am grateful that God in His great mercy and love provides companions for this journey who point out His goodness and who help to keep me focused on that which truly matters. I am thrilled that tonight I can thank God for the victory He gave instead of suffering the guilt of wounding someone and missing His purpose for today. And while my preference would be a day without battles, how can I be an overcomer if I never have anything to overcome? His ways are not our ways. And I can't argue with that.

Prayer:

Father,
As it is written in Romans 5:3-5, We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly You love us, because You have given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with Your love. Please continue to grow us up in You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - The Point of Reference

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone.
James 1:5-6a, NLT

Often, we think we need to either specialize in an area or have some working knowledge about a wide variety of life experiences in order to be able to minister effectively to those around us. And satan is all too happy for us to believe that. The Truth of the matter is, we tend to make following Jesus harder than what it is - which is ONLY true when we're trying to do it in our own power.

You think you can't relate to someone who is struggling with addictions because you've never been an addict? You think you have nothing to offer the one who has been abused or molested because - thank God! - you were never abused or molested? You've been faithfully married for 30 years, so how can you offer any advice or ministry to someone who is facing divorce or who has been divorced twice and needs something? You think you have no point of reference, right? Wrong!

Are you a follower of Christ? Do you believe Jesus is the Answer? This is that moment when it all comes together. You've had all the pieces - the knowledge of what you need to know - but all of a sudden the wisdom is applied and Voilà! You've got it! The generation twice removed might have exclaimed, Eureka! The next generation would say, Duh... and stretch it to at least two syllables.  Today, Emeril would just say, BAM!

Jesus has never been married. Jesus was never divorced. Jesus is not, has never been, will never be an addict. He was not sexually molested, nor did He molest anyone. (Just to name a few...)  But He bore the guilt, the shame, the penalty of all those sins and more, and paid for them all at Calvary with His death on the Cross. He overcame death, hell and the grave and set us free in the process.  Jesus has EVERY point of reference - no matter the circumstance. All we have to do is listen to HIM. Not only will He provide the answer; He IS the answer no matter what the question or who is asking.

Prayer:

Father,
We come to You, according to Your Word. We need wisdom, and You said You will give it to us and not rebuke us for asking. And we declare, Father, that our faith is in You alone. Help us to minister Your all-knowing Truth, in wisdom, to a desperately lost and dying world. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Myth Busters

And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
Titus 2:12-14 NLT

MythBusters is an American pop-science TV show that tests the validity of rumors and urban legends that are generally believed to be true. Items such as:

A penny dropped from a skyscraper lands with enough force to either kill a pedestrian on the sidewalk below or embed itself into the sidewalk.
It is possible to pick up radio signals through a tooth filling.
Holding a large sheet of plywood will slow a fall from a building enough to make it survivable.

All of which have been accepted as believable, but none of which are true, by the way.

With the aid of the Internet, myths and urban legends are detrimentally rampant because lots of people will believe almost anything they read in written form. It's astonishing to discover how often a myth or rumor is widely accepted as truth simply because someone has heard it, read it or said it so many times.

The verses from Titus jumped out at me today. How often do we buy the lie that we'll never be able to overcome a particular sin in our lives because we believe we were 'born that way' or we've 'always been like this' or 'that's just the way I am'? Verse 14 declares that Christ gave His life to free us from EVERY kind of sin. I don't see an asterisk that lists any exclusions. It doesn't read 'except for.'

Let's bust a few myths today, shall we? It doesn't matter how many times you've tried and failed. It doesn't matter how many times someone has proclaimed that you will never be this or that. It doesn't matter how many times you've heard it, read it or said it... The Truth is this. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

God's Truth - His Word - is the original myth buster. Put it to the test.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for shining the light of Your Truth in our lives. Help us to understand Your Word and to overcome the myths and rumors and lies about our own lives and about You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Un-surrendered

The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.

Exodus 13:21-22 NLT

When the Israelites left Egypt in a triumphal exodus, it was because they followed the Lord - cloud by day, fire by night. God's plan was to protect them from the heat of the sun during the day (cloud) and protect them from the cold of the wilderness at night (fire) and to lead them into the promised land.

The original plan was to go across the wilderness, not spend 40 years wandering in it before they got to their destination. However, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They wanted to do it on their own because they didn't like waiting... It's just as bad when we pray, but try to insist that God does it our way. Nevertheless, it is important to know that God still took care of them. Air to breathe, shade and warmth, food every day, clothes didn't wear out.

You may know this story -
  • A Christian is on top of a roof during a great flood. A man comes by in a boat and says "Get in, get in!" The Christian  replies, "No, I have faith in God, He will deliver me." Later the water is up to his waist and another boat comes by and the guy tells him to get in. He responds that he has faith in God and God will deliver him. With the water at about chest high, another boat comes to rescue him, but he turns down the offer again because "God will deliver me."
With the water at chin high, a helicopter throws down a ladder and they tell him to get on. Mumbling with the water in his mouth, he again turns down the request for help for the faith of God. Then he drowns. He arrives at the gates of heaven with broken faith and says to Peter, "I thought God would deliver me and I have been let down."
St. Peter shakes his head and responds, "I don't know why you think that! We sent you three boats and a helicopter."
How many times do we miss God's plan and purpose because He didn't do it the way we thought it should be done? Remember, the world missed Christ's first appearance because He didn't come the way they thought He should.

I firmly believe God gives us strength and intelligence to accomplish all that we need to do. I don't know about you, but here's what I must remember to NOT do...

1. I must NOT forget that the strength and intelligence I do possess are not, were not, and will never be of my own doing, and are not given for me to do MY will.

2. I must NOT only listen to God's leading AFTER I can't do it on my own, and

3. I must NOT try to tell God how I want Him to do His role within my parameters.

God is a loving God. He is omniscient. He WILL let me do it on my own, if I insist. Uh... no thanks.

Father,
Like Job, I understand - Who am I to question Your wisdom in such ignorance?  I will live to declare Your mighty works. Works that only You can accomplish using those who will follow You in SUBMISSION to Your authority. Keep us ever mindful of this Truth. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - All of It

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say."
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative - that is, the Holy Spirit - he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 14:16-17a, 23, 26 NLT

I have been amazed at how many times I see and read the words 'all' and 'everything' within Scripture.

God is not a god of half-measures. 1st Corinthians 15:28 NLT reads, Then, when all things are under his authority, the Son will put himself under God’s authority, so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things, will be utterly supreme over everything everywhere. Other translations of the Bible end that verse with God being all in all.

ALL glory, ALL honor, ALL power are His. He doesn't want half-measure from us, either. Mark 12:30 reads, And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. ALL of it.

Jesus Christ doesn't do anything half-measure, either. Every word He spoke was what He heard from the Father. Everything He did was the Father's will. Jesus Christ gave His all - sacrificed His life - so that we could be cleansed from ALL our sin (1st John 1). Not all the ones except for those things we might really like to do or the ones we consider aren't "that bad"...
ALL of it.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit also doesn't deal in half-measures. Verse 17 of our text begins, He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. No half-truths; therefore, no deceit. He will expose every lie of the enemy if we will listen and obey.

In Ephesians 4, we are instructed, And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior

ALL of it.

Prayer:

Father,
We submit our lives to the Authority of Christ. We choose to walk after the Spirit so we can walk in righteousness. Father, be our All in all. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Absolutely Thrilling

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening, accompanied by the ten-stringed harp and the melody of the lyre. You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done.
Psalm 92:1-4 New Living Translation

When was the last time you can say you were thrilled with what the Lord has done for you; as in - you FELT the thrill? Has it been awhile? If so, why? Have you forgotten?

In the big scheme of things, if we compare ourselves to the God of the whole universe, how important are we? And then to think, our lives and everything about us is of GREAT importance to the Creator. There's no guesswork in that - no supposition.

God is the Great I AM. He breathed life into a dustball and created mankind. It's that God who sent His Son - Alpha and Omega, Beginning and the End, Lord of all and over all, our Deliverer, our Healer, and our Righteousness - to die for us; to create a way for us to be in relationship with Him. He makes a way when most can't even hope for it. How? Through His Son, Jesus Christ. Christ IS the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Scripture defines Him as Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Holy One of the Highest, Emmanuel. He is our Advocate, our Righteous Judge. He is all-powerful, omnipotent, omniscient. He's King above all other kings. Royalty to the extreme and He desires a relationship with you. Aren't you absolutely thrilled about that?

Honey, if that don't light your fire, your wood's wet.

Prayer:

Father,
There is no thrill like the thrill when we come to the understanding of Your love for us. Open our understanding to all You would have us see and know. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Run Home

The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.
Psalm 27:4-5 NLT

I remember as a child - whenever I was afraid or in trouble - I just wanted to go home. It was not always the safest place, but it was home. Now, I run to the Lord. In Him, I know I am always safe, always protected, and always, eternally loved.

This Psalm is so eloquent. When I'm in a battle, this is where I run. I believe you will find what you need, too.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.

The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music.

Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Do not turn your back on me. Do not reject your servant in anger. You have always been my helper.
Don’t leave me now; don’t abandon me, O God of my salvation! Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.

Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me.

Do not let me fall into their hands. For they accuse me of things I’ve never done; with every breath they threaten me with violence.
Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living.

Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

Prayer:

Father,
I am confident that I will see Your goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the right path. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - What Do You Expect?

But his joy is in those who reverence him, those who expect him to be loving and kind.
Psalm 147:11 LB

Expect is a verb; an action word. It is generally defined one of three ways:

  • To believe with confidence, or to think it most likely that an event will take place in the future, as in, 'That was expected to happen.'
  • To wait for an anticipated thing, such as 'I expect a visit soon.'
  • To anticipate something as right or duty, for instance, 'Parents expect their children to obey the rules.'
If a child thinks you expect him to fail, he will. If he thinks you expect him to behave badly, he will. By the same token, if you expect him to succeed, he will give it everything he's got. He'll do more than he would typically be able to accomplish simply because you expect it of him. Husbands and wives do the same thing. And statistics prove that if an employee expects to be fired, he will invariably do something that will expedite that very action. People will rise and fall to what is expected of them. Yes, expect is very much an action word.

We are made in the image and likeness of God, according to His Word. We are His children. His love never changes, but His joy or anger with us can be kindled by our actions toward Him and what He expects of us, whether implicitly or explicitly defined. 1st John 3:2-3 tells us, Dear friends, we are already God's children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.
[emphasis mine]

Having certain expectations is not wrong as long as they line up with God's Word. God's joy is in those of us who reverence Him, those who expect Him to be loving and kind. He expects us to accept Christ's sacrifice for our sin as the gift of mercy and grace that it is. God expects us to be pure as He is pure. These are reasonable expectations. What do you expect?

Prayer:

Father,
Set our sight on things above and not things on earth. Help us to walk according to Your expectations of us. We want to walk with clean hands and pure hearts. Let us see You for who You are. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Heart Check

Listen to me! You can pray for anything, and if you believe, you have it; it’s yours!
Mark 11:24 The Living Bible

As Christians, we love to quote this Scripture! We like to just jump right in there and pray for anything and think we should get it. After all, isn't that what it says? Actually no, it isn't.
This was Jesus' response to Peter's being amazed at the fig tree being withered - the one Christ had cursed the day before.

The spoken word is powerful, no doubt, but let's do a heart check on this. Knowing Christ for who He is, we know that everything He says and everything He does are always in the will of God. That's where we start.

What are we praying for? Does it line up with the Word of God? Does it oppose the Word of God in any manner? If whatever we're praying for does NOT line up with the Word of God, it definitely is not the will of God, so it's not happening. It doesn't matter how much you pray or how much you believe... which brings us to the next checkpoint.

Believing. He didn't say, "Pray for anything and think you should get it, and it's yours." He clarified BELIEVE. If it lines up with the Word of God, you pray for it and must believe. Not wait and see if it happens. Not wishing and hoping. Not crossing your fingers. Actually believing in faith that it is done!

That's not the end of it. Verse 24 is taken out of context when just uttered on its own. The whole reference includes verses 22-26 - the before-and-after factor I've mentioned in previous posts. Let's read it here:

In reply Jesus said to the disciples, “If you only have faith in God—this is the absolute truth—you can say to this Mount of Olives, ‘Rise up and fall into the Mediterranean,’ and your command will be obeyed. All that’s required is that you really believe and have no doubt! Listen to me! You can pray for anything, and if you believe, you have it; it’s yours! But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive you your sins too.”

Our faith must be in God. We must not doubt. Okay, so our petition lines up with the Word of God. We truly believe. Our faith is in God... what about verse 26? But when you are praying, first forgive... Heart check! Are we holding a grudge against anyone?

Unforgiveness is a deal-breaker. Not only are our prayers not answered, but we can't be forgiven of our sins, either. I don't know about you, but I need forgiveness on a daily basis. Dear Ones, let's check our hearts.

Father,
Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for always making clear what it is You want us to know. Please give us wisdom, according to Your Word, so that we may understand You and all that You would have us do. Check our hearts, Father. Reveal to us the error of our ways. Remove that which alienates us from You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Motivation

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT

A friend posted a phone video that she recorded in her church. It featured four generations of one family - the Ridenours - singing acapella praise of thanksgiving to God in great harmony. I have watched that video dozens of times. You see, I know them. And I know they not only meant every word they were singing, they live it.

As I watched that video over and over, and saw the youngest generation - now young men - I thought about their boyhood and how their father was determined to raise Godly sons. I remember him telling me about reading "Raising a Modern-Day Knight" by Robert Lewis and how motivated he was to instill biblical principles in his boys. (I love to see it coming to fruition!!)

You see, 2004 through 2008, I served with two generations and worshiped with three generations of that family. Sweet people. Salt of the earth. Totally sold out to God. The kind of people who would think of ways to motivate one another and those around them to acts of love and good works. Just a joy to be around and the love remains. That's how God is. Amazing...

Think of the people in your life who motivate you to acts of love and good works. Thank God for them. They are just one more evidence of His unfailing love for us.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for the people You lovingly place in our lives in this journey toward You. Let us be motivated to acts of love and good works and help us to motivate others to do the same. Prod us to remember to make the time to get together and to encourage each other, especially now that the day of Your return is one day closer. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - The BE Attitudes

When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions.
Matthew 5:1-2 The Message

I have no idea how many times I've read this portion of Scripture commonly referred to as the
Sermon on the Mount, beginning with the Beatitudes. And strangely enough, until tonight, I'd never read it in The Message Bible. I love the way this reads in that translation. Read for yourself...

This is what he said:

3 “You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.

4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.

5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.

6 “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.

7 “You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for.

8 “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.

9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.

10 “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for Your Word! Let the Beatitudes become our BE attitudes. We want all of these characteristics to be evident in our lives as we strive to follow You. Help us to be so. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Open House

Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16 The Message

Hebrews 4:12 tells us, For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. And as I read again the verse in Matthew 5, I am cut with these words - Be generous with your lives...

I know after working all week long and keeping up with all the other commitments, it's hard to find time to be generous with our lives!! And yet, we are called to do just that.

I think we have to ask ourselves some hard questions and be truthful with the answers.

You know, we work and we have family and church commitments, and extra-curricular schedules (lessons, sports practices, etc) - we are so busy!! I know some of the people I care about have schedules that are so over-committed that it's exhausting just hearing about them. They're not bad things; there are just too many of them.

Are we over-committed? Are those over-commitments now resulting in less sleep because we lie awake thinking about what we couldn't get done today, and so we'll get up earlier tomorrow to try to get them done? Is it a control thing - we don't want to ask for help? How much stress are we adding to our loved ones when we're in "Hurry up, we have to get to (wherever it is we must be)" mode? Have we taken time to pray about what we should perhaps let go of? Wait - do we even have time to pray about that?

God is interested in relationships. His Word says they'll know we are Christians by our love. We can't show them His love if we're rushing past them to get to the next thing. Today's promise tells it like it is - By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

How do we do that? Keep open house; be generous with your lives...

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive us for being caught up in the cares of this world. Show us how to prioritize what's important and modify our schedules accordingly. Give us the wisdom and the grace to know when and how to say no to those things that stop us from being generous with our lives. We want to live in such a way that others will open up with You. Help us, O God! In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Friends' Favorites - Make It Stop

O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings! Interlude
Psalm 61:1-4 NLT

An interlude is not exactly awe-inspiring in and of itself. Usually, it's a chance for the mind to wander a little, but there's that moment when an interlude can become the main focus - that which causes the before and after of something to be much more meaningful or intense. In the King James Version, it is translated Selah. Basically, it's a pause, a break, stoppage. To cease what we were doing.

We must catch the significance of the placement of this interlude... which according to Google.com is also synonymous with "interval, intermission, break, recess, pause, respite, breathing space" and various others. Let's be real. When our hearts are overwhelmed, we NEED space to breathe. We need a break. Right?

However, you'll notice the Interlude is not placed after 'overwhelmed'; we're not to stop there and dwell on that. It's strategically placed after David declares God is his safe refuge and his place of great safety with God as his covering and shelter. THAT's when David calls for an interlude. Stop - think about a safe refuge. Stop - enjoy a little respite. God's refuge will give us all the breathing room we need! When we get beneath the shelter of His wings and make God our refuge, HE will make it stop.

Prayer:

Father,
When our hearts are overwhelmed with life, help us to live only in YOU, O God, our strong tower, our refuge, our strength. Let us cease our struggling and rest in You alone. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Dream Come True

So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.
James 2:17-22 NLT [underline emphasis is mine]

This passage is about living out your Christian walk. You can't just say you're a Christian. The testimony - the witness - is what people observe in your walk. Just saying it and not living out the tenets of true Christianity is wasting the air it takes for you to say it.

I also believe this same principle applies to the God-placed dreams and desires in your heart. What is your dream? What is it you want to do or accomplish while on this earth? Are you just wishing it would happen? Are you praying? In addition to praying, what are you doing about it? Yes, I said 'doing'!

Okay, first you have to be sure it lines up with the Word of God. You can't expect God to honor anything that opposes or compromises His Word. Make sure your dream coming true will honor God. Stay true to its holy intent.

Second, follow Scripture. To start, read Psalm 37, and NOT just verse 4, (Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart). You'll notice the word 'also' in that verse, then when you read the chapter, you'll find it means 'in addition to' delighting yourself, there is also trusting God, committing to Him, not fretting, not envying, etc.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: There is a huge difference between asking for something and actively seeking it. What are YOU doing toward making it happen? You have to do something - you have to be an active part in it. If you want to be a motivational speaker, an executive, a parent, a teacher, a musician, a writer, a singer - are you doing something about it EVERY day? Are you learning? Are you actively seeking to build your skill set for whatever it is? If and when the opportunity arises, will you be ready? Are you making preparation - all the while trusting God?

You may think too much time has passed and you're too old now. Just as a reminder: Abraham was 100 years old; Sarah was 90 and well past the age of child-bearing. That didn't stop Isaac from being born. Why? Because Abraham believed God and kept planting seed.

What is YOUR dream? What are YOU doing about it?

Prayer:

Father,
Ignite us again! Blow on the dying embers of our dreams and desires. Fan into flames those with holy purpose. Burn off the ones born only of human desire. Fit us for the purpose that You have placed deep within hearts. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - A Servant's Heart

But you have not been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with all his heart and always did whatever I wanted.
1st Kings 14:8b NLT

This Scripture is an excerpt, albeit taken out of context from a prophecy against Jeroboam, but it hits me right between the eyes. As does Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ That one scares me.

There is a HUGE difference between serving and actually having a servant's heart toward the Master. They are not even close to being the same thing. I can serve because I feel it is the right thing to do, but still not have a servant's heart.

We want Him as Saviour, Redeemer, Healer, Provider, etc, but if we've ever argued with God about something we did not want to do or something we did not want to change, then we have not always done whatever He wanted. We have not made Him Lord. Luke 6:46 NLT, “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?"

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive me of my foolish, self-centered focus in life. Change my heart, O God! Make it pure. Give me a servant's heart, one whose only desire is to serve You as Lord and Master. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen

Unwrap It

Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
John 11:43-44 NLT

We love this miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. We've heard all the teaching about how Jesus had to call him by name, otherwise all the dead would have come out at Jesus' command. It's SO exciting to think about that, right? We all want to be onboard for the miracle. We love the very idea! But let's unwrap the making of a miracle...

When do you need one? It's not when everything is going well. It's not when everyone's relationship with the Lord is going great. It's not when all the bills are paid, the kids are healthy, and your marriage is perfect. We need a miracle when we're desperate.

And when we're desperate, do we believe Jesus loves us or do we believe that somehow we're being punished? Do we start to doubt God and His ability? His plan? Think about Mary, Martha and Lazarus when Jesus didn't come right away. He said He loved them. They believed He did... but He didn't come in time. "If You had been here, my brother wouldn't have died..." It is in that place that we have the makings of the miracle.

Jesus told Martha in verse 25 that He is the Resurrection and the Life. What happens in a resurrection? Life is restored to something that is dead - something in which there is no life left. Is it your relationship? Is it your dreams? Whatever it is, let's unwrap it and see the miracle.

Prayer:

Father,
Open our eyes to see the miracle in the making. Cause our hearts to trust You in all things, to walk in faith and not be moved by what we see or hear.  We choose You! Thy will be done. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorites - Make Sure You Hear

The Lord said to Moses, “Write this reminder on a scroll, and make sure that Joshua hears it, too: I will completely erase any memory of the Amalekites from the earth.”
Exodus 17:14 God's Word Translation

This particular battle (where Joshua defeated the Amalekites while Moses was on the mountain with Aaron and Hur holding up his hands) took place about 1446 BC; 40 years before the death of Moses and the subsequent transition to Joshua's leadership. There was no mention of Joshua being the next in line to inherit Moses' position with the Israelites; there was no defined rite of passage.

One particular phrase of this verse leapt out at me this morning. I remembered the part about writing it down and erasing any memory of the Amalekites, but I didn't remember the part about making sure that Joshua would hear it, too. I researched in several translations and it was in all of them - to be certain, to tell it in the ear, to rehearse it, to make sure Joshua heard it, too.

Moses may not have known, Joshua may not have had any inkling, but God's plan was already set in motion. He knew the faithfulness of Joshua. His level of obedience to the letter. Joshua's passion to believe and act on whatever God said without question. Forty years beforehand - 40 years being the symbolism of a time of trial and testing, a type of probationary period. However, Joshua did not know it was probationary. It was Joshua's daily choices that allowed him to fulfill God's purpose in and for his life. Joshua CHOSE a lifestyle of faithfulness, obedience, and faith.

What is God saying in our seemingly insignificant (to us) times that have great bearing on our eternal purpose? We must know this - God does not waste words. There is absolutely NOTHING insignificant when it comes to God's plan. Are we listening? We better make sure we hear - and obey!

Prayer:

Father,
We love Your Word. Remove from our lives the people, places and things that distract us and detract from Your plan and purpose for us. We want to be faithful and obedient like Joshua. We want to fulfill our purpose for You. Help us, O God! In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Friends' Favorite - Every Last Detail

I am come that they might have life...
John 10:10b

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.
John 15:12-14 NLT

There are passages in the Old Testament where I tend to struggle to stay focused. In the early years, especially, I thought, "Why is this in here? What relevance does it have to now?" All the strange names of fathers and sons I couldn't pronounce, of all the generations and how many there were... Did you ever wonder?

I've read about the Tabernacle in the wilderness with all the minute details of each piece and post, and the linen ephod, and the outerwear, and even the underwear for the priests. Without meaning any disrespect, my observation was that it seems somehow tedious. However, now instead of wondering what relevance it has, I want to know WHY it is relevant. And I find myself asking, "Father, what is it You want me to learn in this?"

Let's face it. I'm not going to build a mobile tabernacle in the wilderness. I'm not going to sew linen ephods and add precious stones for the twelve tribes of Israel, but God chose to include all those details in His Word. And knowing that God wastes nothing, what is the purpose of all the details? And then I got it...

It is relevant because of the details. He is I AM - the God of everything. The God of details. Every little thing matters to Him. He has a plan for everything and He wants it done according to HIS standard. He wants the best. He wants perfection. And His way is exactly that.

When He planned our salvation before the foundation of the world, He chose perfection. He planned every last detail. Yes, He provides us mercy and grace, but those are not to excuse our sin. Christ's death and resurrection did not make excuses for us; He made restitution for our debt of sin. Christ gave His WHOLE self for us. We, in turn, owe Him our life. All of it. Every last detail.

Prayer:

Father,
As we come before You, help us to be open and give You all the details of our lives. Help us to understand that we must bring everything - our whole self - as an offering to You so that You can make us new. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
