Promise for Today - God's Plan of Defense

I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him. He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated. My salvation and honor depend on God; he is my strong protector; he is my shelter.
Psalm 62:5-7 (GNT)

You’ll always have people in your life who misunderstand you and don’t like you. Others will criticize you, judge you, attack you, and spread rumors about you. In all of these circumstances, your natural tendency will be to fight back. When you’re misunderstood, you’ll want to defend yourself. When you’re attacked, you’ll be tempted to launch your own attack. When people criticize you, you’ll want to criticize them. When people insult you, you’ll want to hurl back your own insults.

Don’t do it! Instead, let God be your defender. Every time you are attacked, criticized, ridiculed, or misunderstood, you have two choices: You can defend yourself, or you can let God defend you. Which will it be? Who do you think can do a better job defending you? You or God? Of course, God can.

Pay attention to this: You’re most like Christ when you say nothing in the face of attacks, lies, and unfair criticism. You’re most like Jesus when you remain silent and leave it in God’s hands. The Bible says, “When [Jesus] was insulted, he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge” (1 Peter 2:23 GNT). In the face of his unjust conviction and persecution, Jesus did not fight back. When it mattered most, he trusted God to defend him and bring ultimate justice.

King David was criticized and attacked his entire life. In fact, people repeatedly wanted to kill him because they were jealous of him. But David said this: “I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him. He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated. My salvation and honor depend on God; he is my strong protector; he is my shelter” (Psalm 62:5-7 GNT).

People will be jealous of your success, and some will even want to attack you. But like David, you need to let God be your protector, your Savior, your defender, your victor, and your shelter.

Let God handle it. Let him be your defense.

Talk It Over

What practical things can you do in a tense moment to keep from speaking or acting in retaliation?

Why does God want you to remain silent when you are under attack? Why doesn’t he want you to try to prove that you’re right?

How does someone’s attack on your character say more about that person than it does about you?

Prayer:

Father,
          You are our refuge and our shield, our strong tower in times of trouble. Stand before us, Lord, as our defender against every seen and unseen danger. Surround us with Your mighty presence, and let no weapon formed against us prosper. When fear tries to creep in, fill our hearts with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Fight for us, Lord, and let Your justice prevail. We trust in Your unfailing love and rest in the safety of Your hands. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.

In Search of Security

The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.
Psalm 9: 9-10 NLT

Humans require 5 basic needs to survive: air, water, food, shelter, and sleep/rest.  In the Hebrew language, according to the Encyclopedia of the Bible, the idea of security permeates all uses of refuge in the Bible. Security as a shelter from outside elements or from danger. A shelter for the righteous. A refuge to run to. The secret place of the most high (where we find rest).

In our Promise for Today, it means tower as in an inaccessible height. Inaccessible to the enemy. A safe harbor. Isaiah 33:15-16 NLT reads, Those who are honest and fair, who refuse to profit by fraud, who stay far away from bribes, who refuse to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong - In other words, those who live righteously before the Lord - these are the ones who will dwell on high. The rocks of the mountains will be their fortress. Food will be supplied to them, and they will have water in abundance.

You probably recognize Matthew 7:7 NLT, Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  If we seek Him, search Him out, we will find Him, and He will open the door and let us in.

In Jeremiah 29:13, God promised to those captive in Babylon, You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. It's not a question of whether or not we need Him, we do. But will we do what is required of us to actually find Him?

Prayer:

Father,
            Thank You for supplying all our needs - beginning with our most basic needs. You are the Ruach - Breath of Heaven, the Water of Life. You invited us to eat of Your body broken for us. Your Name is our strong tower - the righteous run into it and we are safe. You have provided our Haven of Rest and You give sleep to Your beloved. How marvelous it is to be loved by You! Help us to recognize and always be grateful for ALL You have done, are doing and will do for us through Christ our Saviour. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

From Now Until Easter - Deep Need

From Ash Wednesday until Easter, I will post from Lent and Easter devotionals offered online. Today's post features excerpts written by Leigh Boelkins Van Kempen, a chaplain at Resthaven Care Community in Michigan.
***************************************

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.
Psalm 62:5-8

She had been an indomitable woman! She was strong, independent, wise, determined, and faithful. She was a woman I knew from the community, long before she became a resident in the nursing home where I serve as chaplain. I had incredible respect for her. At least a generation older than I was, she demonstrated for me how a strong woman could manage in a world that didn’t always respect her gifts. I learned a lot from her.

Then dementia invaded her life. It began to undermine her independence. It eroded her wisdom. It depleted her strength. In spite of her determination, she became less and less able to navigate the daily activities necessary to survive unaided, until she finally needed residential care for her safety. This was overwhelmingly distressing to her and to many who had known her self-sufficiency.

But her faith remained intact. We would talk about God—her rock and refuge, her hope and fortress. And as so much was stripped away by dementia, her faith remained. Until. Until dementia took her ability to speak. Until dementia eliminated every shred of her personality, and she spent her final months unable to respond at all, unable to give any indication she was even aware that others were around her.

Even in the silence of profound dementia, God never stopped being her refuge, her hope, her rock, her fortress, her salvation, her deliverance. She waited in silence for a God who never forgot her. And those who loved her kept vigil, waiting for God to call her home.

What was true for her is true for us as well. Whatever our struggle, whatever our trouble, “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us” (v. 8). In silence—or in speech— God is our only hope!

Prayer:

God, our Refuge and Deliverer,
                        We come before You acknowledging our deep need. Help us trust in You at all times, regardless of our circumstances. In Jesus’s Name we pray. Amen.

What to Remember

 Psalm 46 NIV

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According to alamoth.[b] A song.

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Prayer:

Father,
         Help us to ALWAYS remember that You are our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Then we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. You are always with us! You are our impregnable Fortress. We want to know You in Your fullness, Father. Be exalted, O God! In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

My Refuge

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1 NKJV

There are wars and catastrophes - financial instability and unsecured futures wreaking havoc and stress throughout the world's populace. What are we to do? Where can we turn? When they come to the end of their resources and personal ability, people around the world are looking for a refuge.

Webster's defines refuge as 'a shelter or protection from harm; any place one may turn for relief or help.' Surely, that is our God and ONLY our God. In Psalm 62, King David defines refuge this way;

 1 I wait quietly before God,
      for my victory comes from him.
 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
      my fortress where I will never be shaken.
 5 Let all that I am wait quietly before God,
      for my hope is in him.
 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
      my fortress where I will not be shaken.
 7 My victory and honor come from God alone.
      He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.
 8 O my people, trust in him at all times.
      Pour out your heart to him,
      for God is our refuge.

Prayer:

Father,
          In the midst of all that is going on, we declare You are our Refuge. We will wait quietly before You, for You alone are our Rock and our Salvation. Let us never lose sight of Your Truth. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Psalm 62 - A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God

Only in God do I find rest; my salvation comes from Him.
Only God is my Rock and my Salvation— my Stronghold!—I won’t be shaken anymore.

How long will all of you attack others; how long will you tear them down as if they were leaning walls or broken-down fences? The only desire of this people is to bring others down low; they delight in deception.  With their mouths they bless, but inside they are cursing. Selah

Oh, I must find rest in God only, because my hope comes from Him!
Only God is my Rock and my Salvation — my Stronghold! — I will not be shaken.

My deliverance and glory depend on God. God is my strong rock. My refuge is in God. All you people: Trust in Him at all times! Pour out your hearts before Him! God is our refuge! Selah

Human beings are nothing but a breath. Human beings are nothing but lies. They don’t even register on a scale; taken all together they are lighter than a breath! Don’t trust in violence; don’t set false hopes in robbery. When wealth bears fruit, don’t set your heart on it.

God has spoken one thing— make it two things— that I myself have heard: that strength belongs to God, and faithful love comes from You, my Lord— and that You will repay everyone according to their deeds. Psalm 62 Common English Bible

Prayer:

Father,
          So let it be written. So let it be done. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

In Triumph

In my distress I prayed to the Lord,
    and the Lord answered me and set me free.
The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear.
    What can mere people do to me?
Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me.
    I will look in triumph at those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in people.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in princes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
    he has given me victory.
15 Songs of joy and victory are sung in the camp of the godly.
    The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things!
16 The strong right arm of the Lord is raised in triumph.
    The strong right arm of the Lord has done glorious things!
17 I will not die; instead, I will live
    to tell what the Lord has done.
Psalm 118:5-9, 14-17
This is my story - I will not die; instead, I will live to tell what the Lord has done. He alone is my Strength and my Song, and He has given me the victory!
Prayer:
Father,
         Thank You for Your Word that You provided for us - to teach, train and exhort us. Let it come alive in us. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
