Something Different for May - Day 5

You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. And we know that God, in His justice, will punish anyone who does such things. Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?

But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism.

When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God’s law, and you boast about your special relationship with him. You know what he wants; you know what is right because you have been taught his law. You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a light for people who are lost in darkness. You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that God’s law gives you complete knowledge and truth.

Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples? You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it. No wonder the Scriptures say, “The Gentiles blaspheme the name of God because of you.”

The Jewish ceremony of circumcision has value only if you obey God’s law. But if you don’t obey God’s law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile. And if the Gentiles obey God’s law, won’t God declare them to be his own people? In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God’s law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess God’s law but don’t obey it.

For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.
Romans 2:1-29 NLT

Prayer Day 5

Jesus,
It’s hard sometimes to avoid passing judgment on others—even though I'm guilty of sin like they are! You’ve been kind and tolerant and patient to me; help me understand how Your kindness leads to repentance—not my angry judgments. You don’t show favoritism; You alone are worthy to judge. Help me remember that today. Amen.

By Request - Change of Heart

Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world...

Philippians 2:14-15 KJV

Do you ever catch yourself grumbling or complaining for no real reason? Do you get irked because somebody cuts you off in traffic or because someone needs something "right away" when you had planned that time for chilling out?

I've found myself doing that and I don't like it. My prayer has been like the song, ♪♫ Change my heart, O God.  Make it ever true. Change my heart, O God. May I be like You. ♪♫  I don't want to be a malcontent. I want to be blameless and harmless - a light in a dark world.

What I have realized is that God is not going to change my heart by causing others to quit cutting me off in traffic. That's the way I would like for Him to do it. But no, His ways are not my ways...

It has taken me a little while to realize that God has arranged ample opportunities - a veritable onslaught of interruptions and less-than-polite drivers - so that I may be able to practice and overcome not grumbling and/or complaining, and also, to lovingly provide more opportunities to change my heart.

Prayer:
Thank You for Your everlasting love and for the hope that we could be like You. ♪♫ Change our hearts, O God.  Make them ever true. Change our hearts, O God. May we be like You. ♪♫ In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

A Change of Heart

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NLT

How's your heart? Do you know? Are you aware of changes that need to take place - of old lifestyle patterns that need to be made new through Jesus? I heard a great teaching yesterday about the power of change. Let me share a few highlights.

As a general rule of thumb, we don't like change. We like things the way we like them and we want them to stay that way. Change awakens the flesh - our sinful nature. It requires us to adapt. We get our back up about change - annoyed, angry - especially about those changes we didn't ask for. (CoVID, jobs, economy, masks...you get the picture) But change is essential to life.

Think about it. How do you expose a scorpion? Move the rocks where they hide (change the landscape). They need to first be revealed so they can be killed. Any evil we hide in our hearts must also be revealed so it can be killed, too. Change brings about the revealing. Will we allow the Holy Spirit to be the executioner?

Prayer:

Father,
We need a change of heart. In Ezekiel 36:26, You declare, And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Please do it swiftly, Father. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Taking a Turn

That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.”
Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish. Who knows? Perhaps he will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this curse.

Joel 2:12-14a NLT

This leaps off the page to me - Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead. Anyone can accomplish an outward sign. The real question is, Where's your heart?

These are tough times. We seem to all want an end to them, but are we willing to do what is necessary to make the change happen? Will we come to God with fasting, weeping and mourning? Will we render our hardened hearts before God or will we just put on a sad face and say, post or tweet the "right" thing? Are we going through the motions or will we lay our devotions at the feet of Jesus in a desperate prayer for change?

We're not going to find the answers in the headlines. Romans 12:2 tells us, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Only God can change our hearts and minds... and only when we return to Him.

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive us for every act of superficiality - every outward action we've ever taken as a show to someone other than You. Change our hearts, O God! Make us a new creation, according to Your Word. Let our hearts be broken and poured out as we return to You and Your will for our lives as a people, as a nation, and as a world of believers. Let us not withhold anything from You, Father. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
