No Sitting Target

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Hebrews 12:1 NLT

My mother was a runner. I remember the stories about wearing weights the day of the race to help train, but she also said that when she removed them to run, her legs felt light and she would run faster. I think about that when I read this verse. The weight of sin will definitely slow us down.

There are other weights that also impede our forward motion as Christians. When we face adversity. When we grieve. When we burn out, because we will when EVER we try to do life on our own instead of turning to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. We tend to stop dead in our tracks and become a sitting duck for the enemy of our souls.

Every defense training course you might take will tell you that a moving target is much harder to hit. However, if it's sitting still, it's easy to draw down on the target. We must keep pressing toward the prize. Job 17:9a NLT, The righteous keep moving forward...

Prayer:

Father,
Help us to keep our eyes on You, to look to the hills knowing our help comes from You. We do not want to be sitting targets. Be our Strength and our Guide to keep moving forward. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
