Promise for Today - Reminding Who?

Please remember what you told your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations. But if you return to me and obey my commands and live by them . . . I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored.’
Nehemiah 1:8-9 (NLT)

When you pray, it turns your attention toward God and helps you to see that he is bigger and more powerful than any of your concerns. And as you watch God answer your prayers, your faith deepens.

Four ways to pray effectively, based on the life of Nehemiah:

1. Base your request on God’s character. Pray like you know God will answer you. You can say something like, “God, I’m expecting you to answer this prayer because of who you are. You are a faithful God. You are a great God. You are a loving God. You are a wonderful God. You can handle this problem!”

2. Confess the sins you’re aware of. That’s what Nehemiah did. He said, “I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned! We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us” (Nehemiah 1:6-7 NLT). It wasn’t Nehemiah’s fault that Israel went into captivity. He wasn’t even born when it happened; he was most likely born in captivity. Yet he included himself in the sins of his people. He essentially said, “I’ve been a part of the problem.”

3. Claim the promises of God. Nehemiah prayed to the Lord, saying, “Please remember what you told your servant Moses” (Nehemiah 1:8 NLT). Can you imagine saying “remember” to God? Nehemiah reminded God of a promise he made to the nation of Israel. In effect, Nehemiah prayed, “God, you warned through Moses that if we were unfaithful, we would lose the land of Israel. But you also promised that if we’d repent, you’d give it back to us.”

Does God have to be reminded? No. Does he forget what he’s promised? No. Then why should you claim God’s promises when you pray? Because it helps you remember what God has promised.

4. Be specific in what you ask for. If you want specific answers to prayer, make specific requests. If your prayers consist of general requests, how will you know if they’re answered?

When you pray, you’re submitting yourself to God’s sovereignty, acknowledging that he is active in all the details of your life and able to provide for your every need. But prayer also brings you into alignment with God’s will, helping you understand how and why he answered the way he did.

And never doubt this: God answers your prayers.

Talk It Over

What is a prayer request you’ve recently made of God that you think is still unanswered?

Pray again for that request, following the steps above. Do those steps change your prayer?

What promises of God do you need to embrace?

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for every promise You have spoken over us - promises of hope, peace, provision, and eternal love. When our hearts grow weary, or our thoughts are clouded with doubt, remind us of Your faithfulness. Let Your Word be the anchor that steadies us in every storm.
In moments of uncertainty, whisper Your truth to our souls. In moments of joy, we will give thanks for Your goodness. And in all things, keep our hearts aligned with Your will, so that we walk boldly in the light of Your unfailing Word.
Help us to recall, mind and heart, that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Teach us to trust that what You have spoken will come to pass in Your perfect timing. May our lives reflect the confidence of one who knows that Your promises never fail. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Thanksgiving Devotional - A Season of Thanks

For the rest of the month, I will share Thanksgiving moments by Crosswalk/Home Word.
Today's devotional was written by Kelly McFadden
**********************************************************************************

All Your words are true; all Your righteous laws are eternal. —Psalms 119:160

This holiday season, you will most likely hear the song “My Favorite Things” from the Broadway musical The Sound of Music. To me this song has always felt out of place during the holidays, until recently. I have begun to hear it in a new light, recognizing the famous list of “favorite things” as a list of reasons to be thankful. The character Maria, who sings this song, thinks about her list of favorite things when she seeks comfort.

Christians have a list as well. Found in the Bible are promises from our Lord – keepsakes we can cling to at all times, including periods of worry, trouble, or despair. These promises urge Christ-followers not to be troubled or to feel alone. They are words offering great hope because they are not the words of mere men. They are inspired, never-changing words given to us from our Savior and Lord. Read through a few of these promises below:

The Lord will give His people strength. Psalm 29:11
The Lord hears our cries. Psalm 34:17
The Lord will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4-5
The Lord will answer when you call to Him. Jeremiah 33:3
You need not be afraid. God is with you. Isaiah 41:13
The Lord will give rest to your burdened soul. Matthew 11:28-29
The Lord will comfort you. John 14:27
The Lord has given us His Spirit to guide us. Acts 1:8
You will have everlasting life when you believe. John 3:16

The list can go on and on. The Lord promises us mercy, protection, strength, eternity, love, and forgiveness. As it says in the Bible, God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18) and His word is truth (John 17:1). We cannot look at God’s promises like we do those of our friends and family. As people, we often promise, but don’t follow through, even when we have the best of intentions. God’s Word is binding and true. These promises hold fast. We do not have to wonder if they will happen. Rather, we ought to wait in expectation. So “when the dog bites, when the bee stings, when you’re feeling sad,” I encourage you to remember all God has promised you. It is in these promises that you will find great strength.

As you celebrate the season of Thanksgiving, in addition to thinking through all you are thankful for, take time to thank God for His many promises.

Promise for Today - Promises, Promises

What? No Scripture?

That's because I couldn't find one - not one -  in any of the translations I have access to - not one single Scripture that tells me after I accept Christ as my Savior, I won't have any more problems, even though I've heard people say that. Yeah? Well, Promises, Promises.  I can't give you that promise - today or any day - because it is not in the Word of God.

However, Christ Himself gave the Promise that He will NEVER leave you (Hebrews 13:5, Deuteronomy 31:6,8, Joshua 1:5 NKJV). And the Promise that He will be with you until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20b NKJV). I can Promise that He will complete the work that has been started in you because He said so (Philippians 1:6 NKJV). You can see those have Scripture to back them up.

Other Promises God offers include that whatever is born of God overcomes the world (1st John 5:4); that we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37); that we have victory over death, hell and the grave. (Revelation 20:14). Jesus also said that in this world we WILL have many trials and sorrows, but we are to "take heart" because He has overcome the world (John 16:33 NLT).

But I'd like to point out something for your consideration... You're not an overcomer unless there is something to overcome (Revelation 12:10-11). You do not become a conqueror unless you face something that needs to be conquered (Romans 8:36-37). How can you have a victory without a fight or battle (James 1:12, Revelation 2:10)? Promises, Promises, and more promises. And those are REAL promises.

Prayer:

Father,

Give us beauty for ashes. The oil of joy for mourning. Be our Strength. Grow us up in You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Reminder - Storms and All

Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Mark 13:31 NLT

I was on my way home from a meeting. The sun was behind me shining brightly into the mass of storm clouds ahead of me. I knew conditions were right for a rainbow...and I was not disappointed. I thanked God for it as I watched it appear, not only for its beauty but for the covenant - for His Word that stands the test of time. And in that moment, the Holy Spirit pierced my heart with understanding and hope...

As I mentioned, the sun was fully shining behind me, but the storm clouds ahead were daunting. The kind you watch for signs of a tornado. I don't like those, and I had the fleeting thought, 'Why head for the storm when you could turn around and ride into the sunset?' and it was in that moment that the rainbow appeared and I felt peace.

You see, I've been riding the edge of a storm in my life. The winds have been howling, the thunderous clamor of life's circumstances overwhelming at times, and it feels like I'm headed straight into it with no hope to avert. I've been so concerned with trying to find a way to get around or away from the storm that I'd completely lost sight of the ability to go through it with my God who promised to never leave me, to never forsake me.

Storms come and go. Battles wax and wane, but the same God who proclaimed, "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away", also promised in Matthew 28:20, "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Storms and all.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for Your promises. Thank You for loving us beyond our comprehension, and thank You for being a God who is with us always. Strengthen our hearts, O God, in Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Pure Promises

The Lord’s promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over.
Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land.
Psalm 12:6-8 NLT

Several truths pierced my heart while reading this psalm. The first is that no matter the lies and deception going on in the world around us, the Lord's promises are pure. They have always been and will always be. God's Word will surround us and protect us and lead us in the way we should go. Psalm 119:105 assures us His Word is a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path even in this dark world with its seemingly overwhelming obstacles.

The second revelation was how this particular psalm (written sometime around 3,000 years ago) could just as easily have been written about the world's situation today. Lying neighbors, how fast the godly are disappearing, people say or post whatever lies they want to with no repercussions, the wicked strut about like they've earned the right, and evil is praised throughout the land... And yet, in the middle of it all, we are reminded that the Lord's promises are pure. The evil of mankind does not and cannot defile His promises.

Peter reminds us in 1st Peter 1:24-25 of the truth in Isaiah 40:8,  As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And that word is the Good News that was preached to you. Pure...

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You that Your Word is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Give us a fresh anointing to embrace Your Word, to keep our thoughts and intents pure before You, and to shine Your Light until You return to take us Home with You. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Not Ever

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?
Numbers 23:19 NLT

We were celebrating my daughter-in-love's birthday at a restaurant with a covered outdoor venue, complete with cake and a big bouquet of balloons. We were having a great time, when somehow, the balloons got loose and floated to the top of the high pavilion. My 8-year-old granddaughter called out to her father, "Daddy, the balloons!" but they were already too high, and she began to cry.

She LOVES balloons and she had already planned to play with them when she got home and now they were out of reach. He came over to her and quietly assured her that he would get them for her, but she couldn't see how and continued crying. He got her full attention when he said her name and then told her, "I'll get them. I promise."

Well, he didn't immediately spring into action and she wasn't quite done sniffling, and as she climbed into my lap, she mumbled plaintively that she didn't know how he was going to get them. As I held her, I asked, "Did Daddy promise?" and she nodded.
"And doesn't he always keep his promises?" She nodded again.
"Then you will have your balloons." To which she replied, "But he's not doing anything..."
"He will. You can trust his promise."

To make a long story short, they did get the balloons down and in her hands - in fact, he used her to get them. To the astonishment of those in attendance, he and one of his friends lifted her above their shoulders - like cheerleaders do - and she was able to fully extend and retrieve the balloons. She could do that because she had been to cheer camps and loved that move... even though she doesn't currently plan to be a cheerleader.

What a great illustration of trusting our heavenly Father at His Word. Our heart's desire - according to His will - is seemingly out of our reach. It looks impossible and it doesn't seem as though the Father is doing anything... and yet, He promised. His plan is perfect and He uses our faith in Him and the abilities He has provided to make it happen.

Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? Not ever!

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for such a beautiful teaching moment and the illustration of trusting You at Your Word. Let it grow deep into our hearts. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

What?

8 Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has his promise failed for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?
Psalm 77:8-9 NIV

Following her recent trip to Israel, my friend, Hope, sent me a book titled Footprints, Scripture with Reflections inspired by the poem of the same name. I just want to share something from it that has spoken to me today.

*********************
When faced with bewildering circumstances, we are tempted to ask "Why?". But a better question to ask is "What?... What do You have in mind now, Lord?"

Hosea 6:3 NIV
3 Let us acknowledge the Lord;
let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises,
he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.

Psalm 55:22 NIV
22 Cast your cares on the Lord
and he will sustain you;
he will never let
the righteous be shaken.

Jeremiah 33:3 NIV
3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Prayer:

Father,
We certainly don't always understand, but Your Word assures us that You are faithful and trustworthy and full of grace and mercy. We pray believing according to Your Word in Proverbs 3:5-6, that we will trust in You Lord with all our heart, and lean not on our own understanding; In all our ways we will acknowledge You, and You shall direct our paths. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
