Promise for Today - Being Present

Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.
Job 2:13 (NLT)

If you're always in a hurry, then you're never going to be a great listener. To have great conversations, you start by investing as much time as needed. Why? Because you can't listen very well when you’re in a hurry. Great listening takes time.

Job was a wealthy man who lost virtually everything, including his money, health, and even his children. “When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. . . . Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words” (Job 2:11, 13 NLT).

This is called the ministry of presence. When you’re ministering to someone in pain, you must remember this: The deeper the pain, the fewer words you use. If somebody's having a bad hair day, then you can talk about it for 30 minutes. But if that person has a major crisis, talking about it for a long time is probably not going to help.

A lot of people don’t know how to help someone who is in crisis. They don't know what to say. Those same people will often stay away from a friend because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing.

The truth is that you don’t need to say anything. Just show up and shut up. You can’t talk people out of their pain. Some pain is beyond words. When it's the right time, your hurting friend will say something. When it's the right time, then you'll be able to say something too.

This kind of investment takes time. Notice how many days Job's friends sat on the ground with him: seven. Do you have anybody in your life who'd sit on the ground with you for seven days without saying anything? That takes a very mature person and a true friend.

If you want to be that kind of friend, then you have to be willing to sacrifice so that you can give people your love, attention, and presence—as much as they need.

Talk It Over

What can you do right now that would give you more margin to be available to your friends when they are in crisis?

Is it difficult for you to listen and not talk in a conversation? If so, why?

Why is it an investment to give someone the ministry of presence?

Promise for Today - Where is He?

Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.
Job 1:21 (NIV)

When you’re a baby Christian, God gives you a lot of confirming emotions and often answers immature, self-centered prayers so you’ll know he exists. But as you grow in faith, he will wean you off these dependencies.

God’s omnipresence and the manifestation of his presence are two different things. One is a fact; the other is often a feeling. It’s a fact that God is omnipresent; he’s always there, even when you’re unaware of him. Even when you don’t feel his presence, you can always trust the fact that God is with you. His presence is too profound to be measured just by emotion. Yes, God wants you to sense his presence, but he’s more concerned that you trust him than feel him. We live by faith, not by sight or by our feelings.

The situations that will stretch your faith most will be those times when life falls apart and God [seems like he] is nowhere to be found. That happened to a man named Job. On a single day, he lost everything—his children, his business, his health, and all his possessions. And then, for 37 chapters in the Old Testament book of Job, God said nothing!

How do you praise God when you don’t understand what’s happening in your life and God is silent? How do you stay connected in a crisis without communication? How do you keep your eyes on Jesus when they’re full of tears? You do what Job did: “Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised’” (Job 1:20-21 NIV).

Tell God exactly how you feel. Pour out your heart to him. Unload every emotion that you’re feeling. Job did this when he said, “I can’t be quiet! I am angry and bitter. I have to speak” (Job 7:11 GNT).

He cried out when God seemed distant: “Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house” (Job 29:4 NIV).

Whether or not you can feel God today, you can trust that he’s there with you. Are you full of doubt, anger, fear, grief, confusion, or questions? Bring it all to God. He is with you, he is for you, and he can handle all your questions and concerns.

The Bible says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31 NIV).

Talk It Over

Think about a time when you couldn’t feel God’s presence. How did you stay connected to him during that time?

Why is God more concerned about your faith than your feelings?

What person do you go to when life gets tough? What do you say to them that you also need to say to God?

Prayer:

Father:
We come before You with an open heart, longing for Your nearness. Let Your light fill every shadow within us, and Your peace quiet every storm. Draw us closer to You, so that our thoughts, words, and actions reflect Your love. Holy Spirit, guide our steps, strengthen our faith, and renew our hope each day. Stay with us, Lord, in every moment - both in joy and in trial - so that we may walk in the comfort of Your presence and the power of Your grace. It is written that we walk by faith, not by sight. Keep us ever mindful of the Truth - the promise of Your presence. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

By Request - Scared to Death

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Psalm 139:1-5 NLT

(My sister, Michelle, wrote this one.)
I remember the days when the first verse of this Psalm scared me to death because I was walking the wrong path. Our upbringing taught us only of a God ready to send us straight to hell if we messed up; do not pass go, do not collect $200. Our generation was brought up getting "the hell" literally scared out of us; the next generation got to live in the luxury of "the grace" teaching which was definitely more about the love of God and not His judgment. However, God is both Judge and justice, and so much more - Grace, Mercy and Love.

If you believe the Word of God, it tells us that God cannot lie, and if we believe the Word, we have to believe all of it. We don't get to just pick the Scripture passages that we like. The same Bible that teaches God is love also teaches us that The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10: 30b-31).

Because I was so scared of God for the majority of my life, I never felt loved by Him. I know I have a long way to go in that area but I at least know now that I AM loved by God. Regardless of what I have done, regardless of what I will do in the future that may not please Him, He loves me... and He loves you!

I wish I hadn't wasted so many years not having that knowledge. I am positive if I stood in front of a roomful of people with their heads bowed and eyes closed, and asked how many truly believe that God loves them - no matter what they had done in their life - very few people would raise their hands. That's the lie the devil perpetuates when we are young and unfortunately, we believe it for a very long time.

It wasn't until I learned to rest in His presence that I could feel His love. It's how we learn about our other friends, right? Spending time with them? So let us spend time in His presence and get to know this God of love. He is, after all, Immanuel, God with us.

Prayer:

Father,
Forgive us for judging You with lies the enemy has sold us. Shine Your Light of Truth on Your Word and reveal it to us in such a way that we'll be holy and acceptable in Your sight. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

Into His Presence

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah 41:10 NLT

Life can seem overwhelming at times. There are those days when we feel like we're facing the world alone. That's scary! It's also a lie from satan himself. We must remember it is written in God's Word that He will never leave us, nor forsake us. We can always choose to be in His presence.

Nothing can stand against us in His presence.
The fullness of joy is found in His presence.
We enter His gates with thanksgiving; we go into His courts with praise. Into His presence... where we are safe; where we can rest. Where there is peace. Wanna go there?

Psalm 95:6-7b NLT reads, Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.

Prayer:

Father,
According to Your Word in Psalm 62, Let all that I am wait quietly before You, God, for my hope is in You. You alone are my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. So let it be written, so let it be done. We will not be shaken in Jesus' Name. Amen

Keeping Track

You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.
Psalm 56:8 NLT

My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help. This I know: God is on my side! I praise God for what he has promised; yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?

I will fulfill my vows to you, O God, and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help. For you have rescued me from death; you have kept my feet from slipping. So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light. Psalm 56:9-13

Prayer:
Let it be so, Father - to walk in Your presence. To find comfort  - REAL Comfort - to be able to give to others in need. For this, we thank You and give praise.  In Jesus' Name AMEN

* What Price Peace?

[Jesus speaking] I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14:27 NLT

We live in stressful times. I'm relatively certain that every generation since the beginning of time has uttered or written those words... Psalm 34:19 reads, The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.  In 2nd Timothy 3:11-12 NLT, Paul writes, You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord rescued me from all of it. Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

Hmmmm...Doesn't exactly give you warm fuzzies, does it?
We think we could have peace if we could just get away or "veg" for awhile - not have to think about anything - or at least think about a lesser number of things. Zone out on mindless pursuits of amusement, but the Truth is that's not real peace. And when we're done trying to do it our own way, we find that peace is fleeting. It won't carry us through the storms of life and yet we keep looking for it in those things.

If I'm going to hunt seashells, I'm not going to look for them by the side of a road (unless I live in Louisiana or Biloxi). If I'm looking for a reliable car, I'm not going to a flea market to get one. If I'm in the market for a house, I'm not going to find it in an aisle at WalMart.  So why would we try to find peace where God is not? The Good News is God gave us a way to deal with the stresses of life. Christ went to the Cross to deliver us out of all our struggles. Isaiah 53:5 in the Amplified Bible reads, But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.

When I feel most overwhelmed - totally stressed out by the things life throws at me - is when I'm trying to do it on my own. In my own strength - in what I believe to be my own ability...when I forget that any ability I have has been given to me by God. I cannot produce peace on my own. I cannot give out peace that I don't have... so why do I think I can find peace that passes understanding anywhere apart from the presence of the Lord?

And to get in His presence, I look for Him. In His Word and in the music about Him. One of my favorites is one sung by Becky Fender years ago. I've included the lyrics here.

Peace In the Midst of the Storm.

When the world that I've been living in collapses at my feet - When my life is shattered and torn
Though I'm windswept and battered, I can cling to His cross and find peace in the midst of the storm

There is peace in the midst of my storm-tossed life. There is an Anchor; there is a Rock to build my faith upon!
Jesus rides in my vessel, so I fear no alarm - He gives me peace in the midst of my storm

When in twenty-four short hours, years of living are brought to moments. And when life's final picture is taking form
In the dark room of my suff'ring there's a light that comes shining through!
He gives me peace in the midst of my storm

And when my spirit has been broken 'till it's wracked by misery. Even when the doctors shake their heads and look forlorn,
Jesus comes to make my bedside a cathedral of hope and love and He brings peace in the midst of the storm

I thank my God for peace in the midst of my storm-tossed life! Oh, there's an Anchor, there's a Rock to build my faith upon
Jesus rides in my vessel, so I fear no alarm - He gives me peace in the midst of the storm.
He gives me peace in the midst of my storm.

John 16:33 NKJV These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

Prayer:

Father,
According to Your Word in 1st Peter 5, we will humble ourselves under Your mighty power, and at the right time, You will lift us up. Father, we give You all our worries and cares, because You care for us. We will stay alert and watch out for the enemy. We will not be devoured by him. Help us to see past the roar to Your peace. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen
